Are any of you Tokyo (and surrounding areas, of course) people art lovers? I'd like to go see the "Vermeer and the Delft Style" exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art in Ueno -- it features 7 actual Vermeer paintings! The exhibition runs until the 14th of December. Let me know if you're interested!

ETA: here is some info: in Japanese and in English.

On of the unquantifiable rewards of teaching that I like best is the amount of lols you get out of students mispronouncing or misunderstanding things. Today, we started working on "Rudoph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" for the kids' little Christmas show. My co-teacher R and I were trying to figure out which roles they should play, so we started assigning them reindeer names.

"And we need a Santa," R said. "Maybe Chikara [our oldest boy] could be Santa?"

"That would leave us one reindeer short," I pointed out, because there are 9 kids in the class.

"I'm not short," Chikara protested, standing up. "I'm tall!"

He was mightily confused when we both burst out laughing, but seemed to accept our explanation of, "We meant a different kind of short!"
