お久しぶり!
CLAMP has produced many mangas and animes over the years and I do love their more elaborate style （华丽的风格……这华丽该怎么翻啊？？）of drawing but surprisingly I've only seen "Cardcaptor Sakura" the anime (oh, I tried reading 聖伝 but gave up by volume 2). I think that was from way back in my secondary school days? Haaa, it was my first introduction to the idea of BL ... when I realised that Yukito and Toya were not just very very good friends. And that was only when I read that on a fansite. BL remained a hazy idea at the back of my mind and it was only until PMK that it exploded in the form of Hijikata and Souji. Ahhh... 懐かしい!
*cough* That lengthy introduction was really to bring me to my topic for the day ... xxxHolic, another product of CLAMP.
The summary for xxxHolic sounded interesting enough and I was planning to watch it, just later instead of sooner. But I opened the window for epi 1 on crunchyroll by accident and the stone started tumbling downhill.
Once I get over the insanely long limbs of the characters, it wasn't hard to fall in love with xxxHolic. One of the things that attracted me to xxxHolic was a still shot of Yuuko and boy, do I love that lady. The elaborate dresses/kimonos and hair pieces that she dons each episodes are so beautiful!
By Doumeki's 2nd appearance, I was already shipping him and Watanuki. Haa, I've come a long way since "Cardcaptor Sakura". But isn't it plain as day that Doumeki views Watanuki as someone very important to him? Despite being "disliked" by Watanuki, he always risks everything to save Watanuki's ass. And I don't think Yuuko was kidding when she said Watanuki's red thread of destiny ties him to Watanuki. XD Yes, we're hearing the hints being dropped left right centre.
The central theme of 必然「ひつぜん」"inevitability" versus 偶然「ぐうぜん」"coincidence" is intriguing. I like how Yuuko always insist that it's up to the individual to make their own choices. "Fate" ... it sounds like there's a higher power up there deciding your fortunes ... but hitsuzen is more of how your character/actions/choices made it inevitable that you walk down a certain path. Well, that's just my interpretation. That's what I like about xxxHolic. There's always something for you to ponder about after each episode (beyond fangirling Doumeki and Watanuki that is).
There's also no lack of comic relief in the anime, usually courtesy of Watanuki. ^^ Oh, I love how the passers-by are grey with no faces. 路人就是路人。哈哈。
