I <3 my neighborhood.
The other day, my backyard neighbor called me up to check if it was OK for her to remove the fence between our backyards. It was old and rusting and broken in places, and only kept there so the previous owner of my house could have an enclosed yard for her dogs. Fine by me, I assured her.
Today, we came home to a nice open area between our yards. While I worked on rebuilding a wall of my garden, I pondered the bushes that were the only things separating our yards now, and thought that I never cared much for them anyways, and maybe we could dig them up and make a nice grassy stretch for our kids to run through. Backyard neighbor came out a little while later and agreed. I invited her to my pie party.
Her son (who is 9) came over for a couple hours while she was in a meeting and he and eldest played together, while my youngerson (the monkey) went across the street to visit some other neighbor friends (who are 8, 5, and 4, I think). While he was out, my next door neighbor's girl (who is 7) came over looking for the monkey, but the older two didn't know where he'd gone. A bit later, after the monkey came home and we sat down for dinner, I got a call from the same neighbor, who, on hearing that the boys didn't know where the monkey was, wanted to check that everything was OK with us.
Neighbor came by later to get her son, and we made tentative plans to work on the bushes next week.
It is so fantastic to have a great house, great kids, and great neighbors.
