beware the ides of march

Springtime is quickly approaching, and it can't get here soon enough.

The early daylight saving shift threw me off. I had just started getting sunlight to help me wake up by 7am when EDT, combined with some overcast days, threw me back into darkness. I -hate- waking up in darkness. I've been terribly sluggish in the morning for the entire week. Even my morning tea has not been making a dent in the gray.

My insulated Citizen's Bank mug at work finally died on its nth drop to the floor. The base had been cracked for a while, but then the top split as well, and would dribble when I sipped. So it got tossed, and my old Bruegger's mugs dug out from the depths of my cupboard. Why didn't I do this before?! 20 oz of steamy hot breakfast tea is a fantastic improvement over 12. The only downside is that my mug won't fit in the cupholder of my car anymore.

My car has another paint scratch to add to its battle scars, this time on the driver's door at about 2mph. This scratch would not be notable except that the other car got a nice dent in the corner of his bumper. Sigh. On the bright side, the car owner seemed calm and reasonable over the phone, and will hopefully be willing to settle with just my checkbook. Also, this keeps up my record of having never hit anything moving (with the car).

I probably won't bother with a paint job, but I did go back to my regular tires today, thanks to warm-enough, dry weekend weather. Then the boys and I got out our other tires and took advantage of the warm-enough, dry weekend and later sun to go for our first roll out on the Jail Trail. We just did a quick 5ish mile downtown-and-back today, but it was SO good to get out and get the wheels moving. I think I'm gonna have to join them on my bike very soon, as my blades were getting fairly well out-paced. Either that, or I need to actually plan to get a workout. By chance, we rolled right by es5f, who joined us for the roll back, and then for dinner and leftover pi(e).

I had dithered about celebrating pi day properly with the actual Pie Party only a bit over a month (!) away (This is the one. Carnival time. Pie day. Tell your friends.), but I realized I still had yummy homemade xmas pie crusts from katybeth (thanks!) that needed to be used, and the boys are just at the age where they are really starting to appreciate geeky humor, AND are interested in helping me bake, AND I had people to share it with, soooooo... I couldn't resist. I whipped cream to go with the pumpkin and made crockpot dulce de leche to go with the apple. They were both, of course, very yum.

The crockpot's been getting a lot of use lately, and, in a couple days, will help with my yearly Irish celebration with a large hunk o' corned beef and a bunch of roots. Mm, I'm hungry for it already. I'll also be planting some roots and leaves and fruits, very soon, into my poor ignored garden. This weekend was spent trimming and clearing out deadness from various parts of the yard, checking out all the lily greens and peeper purple flowers poking up so far, and pondering new ways to have lots of mint that I don't have to worry about spreading too far. On request, I also helped a boy transplant a bunch of the wild onion/garlic that is slowly taking over my front yard into planters for his private cultivation. I've been pondering what to do with the expanding Allium vineale population. On one hand, I believe I may soon have a yard entirely of garlic in a few years, if I do nothing about them. On the other hand, would that really be a bad thing? I'm considering trying to use them in or around my garden to dissuade the rabbits I know I will start seeing again soon from partaking, or perhaps finding some culinary uses for them.

So if I smell faintly of garlic when I wake up groggy in the not-quite-lightness of the mornings these days, forgive me.
