but I'm gathering the corn with laughter

I missed posting on the autumnal cross-quarter by a couple days, thanks to an increasingly busy schedule, so doing it on the numerically stuttering day instead. Moving into the second half of summer and starting a harvest has meant a lot less relaxation, but still plenty of good things.

The garden is being gardened. I think I finally may have defeated the rabbits, or else the vegetables in there are too mature to be considered sweet and tasty for them. Anyways, I've got carrots, green onions, a couple tiny spinach plants which may have survived, one thriving pea plant, and 5 actively producing tomato plants. Everything's been sampled now, and declared yummy, although I have no idea when to dig up the carrots, so they're mostly just sitting there.

After doing a lot of researching and thinking, I finally found a grill for my backyard. It's a big charcoal Weber grill. After figuring out the correct way to light the coals (it took a bit of practice), I can now use it mostly successfully. So far, I've experimented with cooking hamburger, chicken, mushroom (portabella and sliced button), onions, corn, cornbread, carrots, egg, and, of course, marshmallows. The boys are really wanting to try pancakes, so I'll have to figure out how that might work. It's a fun toy.

I started running this week. Well, jogging slowly and walking. And some other non-specific, regular workout things, with the goal of getting me back into a shape where I don't feel like a total wimp. It was surprising (and rather disheartening) to see how little I could do, but I'm feeling the difference even from a little bit (mostly, I'm about twice as hungry). I hope I can keep it up.

I've been busy lately doing database prep for a con I'm working next week. Combine that with helping kids on summer projects and packing for their vacation, general yardwork, housecleaning and foodstuff in prep for party on Sunday, and I barely have time to be social right now. Which, I suppose, is why I'm bringing the party to me.

I'm in Florida most of next week, and Boston some of the week after. Silly me, I realized after I bought my tix that I get back from Boston just in time to miss the last airport shuttle to Oakland. Is there anybody willing to pick me up from PIT shortly after midnight early on Aug 25?
