Yeah, first episode of Data Squad got put up on Youtube eventually. I'm pretty sure Data Squad is never going to air in the UK, I don't see how it'd be any different from Frontier. Besides, the TV in my room is erratic at the best of times.

It was... well, it was all right. I have to say, I wasn't hugely enamoured of the Savers art style when Masaru/Tohma/etc. were first unveiled, and seeing it in motion hasn't made me any more fond of it. There's nothing wrong with it per se, and the characters do get some funny facial expressions... I just like the looks of Tamers and Frontier better.

My impression of Masaru/Marcus before watching any of Savers was that he was an idiot. My impression of Marcus now is that he's still an idiot, but a cool idiot. He's kind of pretty, weird little ponytail and all. I still think he could've at least been given goggles at some point, though. Rating, definitely ahead of canon Takuya and maybe on Daisuke's level so far. I think both "toots" and "dollface" sounded fine in context, but I've kept away from the subs and don't know any better. ;D I do like his voice too, even if his voice actor doesn't know the meaning of variety ("M-A-R-C-U-S, got it memorised?!"). Thing that struck me most about it is that it's just a little high-pitched. I swear Tai in Adventure had a deeper voice and Tai is 11, whereas Marcus is 14... Actually, it's probably Marcus who sounds fine and Tai/Davis/Takato/Takuya who all have voices too old for their ages, but shh.

I don't really like the Savers version of Agumon, either. Something about the redesign bugs me. I think it's something about the shape of the head, or maybe the eyes - I think he looked more aesthetically pleasing with a bin on his head, anyway. Streamlined doesn't suit Agumon. The dub doesn't give any distinction between Baby Burner and Baby Flame, either - both of them are "Pepper Breath", which annoys me for some reason. As far as personality goes? He sits on a very fine line between "lovable" and "aggravating", and falls off on the wrong side of that line quite a lot. But his voice isn't that bad, despite the weird mental images it brings up. Blame me for watching episodes of dub Tamers earlier, I guess.

Oh right, by the way, GeoGreymon definitely can't top original Greymon. Simplicity is a giant helmeted firebreathing dinosaur - no spikes or red armbands required. Growmon could've learnt from that too, come to think of it.

The rest of the characters are uninteresting and have uninteresting voices to boot. Sort of. Yoshino deserves a mention, but only because she got what sounded like the most forced line in the episode. "Marcus is the worst!" I can let it go because the rest of her lines were alright and she did do a lot of talking, but that was the only part of the episode VA-wise which really grated.

On the episode itself? Not much to say. It does seem to have inherited some of the pacing problems from Frontier, although that may be partly the fault of the dub. The evolution sequence for GeoGreymon looked like a CGised rip-off of the Tamers evolution sequences... right, some of the Tamers evolution sequences had CG as well, but you get the point. Several times, I've heard Savers itself described as "the next step up from Tamers" or "what if the Tamers worked for Hypnos"? But in the episode itself, other than the obvious DATS = Hypnos, I'm not seeing that yet.

Have already shared my thoughts on opening themes, but I'll take another moment to complain about them. I miss the Frontier Di-gi-mon! chorus thing.

I still won't be hitting up subs yet, but so far, Digimon Data Squad seems great! Just hoping it'll stay that way! ♥
