okay. you guys were on the money when you were talking about his unnevenness yesterday. well spotted. i still can't really see it myself cos i just see the flicking hind leg which to me looks like a fly thing. anyway, thank you.

had a lesson & we ran some diagnostics. first, led him up the road to the park. this was quite momentous as we had to walk along the road with traffic, and pass people schooling their horses at a neighbouring agistment center and then... then....

ALPACAS.

yeah.

anyway.

so he was about 22hh & breathing fire by the time we got to the park. he recovered quite well (better than expected for beejay!) and i led him around doing lots of transitions & yielding.

then got on & he was promptly crazy.

so off, walked home. took saddle off, got on in round yard bareback. much more relaxed. W & T around.
put saddle back on & rode in RY. fine, relaxed. huh.

rode up to arena - straight away piggy. muscled him onto the contact & once he was working deep & round, there was no bullshit at all. w & t, then nice canter each way. but then carly noticed him step funny (i didn't feel it) but after a 20m circle or so of trot, i could feel it in his hind end, which is a similar 'lameness' to what he showed up with in early november. not dog lame, but twitchy & not right.

so he's showing soreness thru his longissimus dorsi and into the top of his haunches, especially his nearside. he did have a trapped nerve in his offside shoulder (which has been treated) so this may be connected (you know, compensating on opposite side?).

as carly said before, there's always a reason for evasion. at least with soreness, we can do things to try and fix it. he was pretty good at telling me something wasn't right but i wasn't listening very well because of my emotional history with him. also, in the last month he has been treated by chiro, bowen & sports therapy/laser so i was hopeful they had fixed whatever soreness he'd shown in november.

working 'round' is better cos as soon as he hollows out & gets above the bit & giraffes up etc and so on, he's hurting, but obviously you shouldn't have to bully your horse onto the contact. carly wasn't sure what was going on with him in the round yard. she figured cos he was relaxed (it's his safe place) he wasn't tense thru the back & in pain, which he obviously associates with the arena.

anyways. so as soon as it's a reasonable, i'll call Kevin (chiro) this morning and arrange an appointment. i'm a bit reluctant to get chiro without corresponding massage, but carly wants me to work thru the various treatments by a process of elimination. so we'll see.

carly, beejay - sour, riding, beejay
