More Toll Free Number Hijinks

What's the 1st commandment of marketing boys and girls? Yes, always, always call your phone numbers twice. Take all phone numbers you are printing, posting, tweeting, etc., call them once yourself and then have someone else call the numbers too. Fail to do so and you may find out the hard way that there are limits to P.T. Barnum theories about all publicity being good publicity.

Listening to ESPN radio on my way to lunch, I heard that NFL player Chad Ochocinco has a children's cereal. On the box, he invites people to call a toll free number and donate money to Feed the Children...only due to a 1-digit typo, if you call the number apparently you get something more along the lines of Spank the Coed. Even funnier was the fact that this inspired the ESPN commentators to tell half a dozen tales of similar snafus in their own careers and/or concerning the ESPN marketing staff.

Funniest of all, other than the fact that Chad Ochocinco has a children's cereal (at least for me)? One of the commentators then had to ask/rant, "How is it possible that every toll free number is one digit off of an adult hotline? I mean, seriously, is porn just the toll free default or what? How many of these numbers can there be?!" Doug, the answers are 1) Adult hotline companies consider doing that to be an excellent marketing strategy, 2) It certainly apears that way at times, and 3) a metric F-ton.
