I realize that most ad campaigns are national ad campaigns and that while we are melting away on the west coast, other parts of the country (like Texas) are experiencing unusually cooler weather. And I realize that sales marketing departments can never be too early with their holiday and seasonal ad campaigns - the Christmas season come closer and closer to overlapping Halloween every year. But even so, this list of email ad subject lines from my inbox this morning made me laugh and declare a marketing fail:
- Talbots - It’s Sweater Weather. Let’s Talk Savings.
- Coldwater Creek - Customers love our fall tweed jacket.
- Stonewall Kitchen - Warm up with some homemade soup.
- Appleseeds - Save $20 on Fall Favorites
- Orvis - Cool new solutions for cooler weather.
- NapaStyle - First Burst of Fall
September is typically a hot month in many parts of the country, Couldn’t these subject lines have waited another month? Maybe even two more weeks? And while we’re at it, to the marketing people responsible for the above, I have replicated your use of capital letters and punctuation above. Newspaper headline grammar rules apply to email subject lines. *adopts her best Jennifer Jason Leigh in the Hudsucker Proxy impression just for the occasion* Unless you’re using a slammer, choose either sentence punctuation or title case caps, not both.
