Dear Yuletide Writer,
Thank you so much for writing a story for me. This is my first Yuletide, and I cannot wait to write my story, as well as receive a story from you! We already have something in common - our fandom - and I am sure I will love whatever you write for me. Everything below is meant as suggestion - you can totally ignore it, but if you don't, I hope it is helpful or at least gives you a starting point.
Things I Like: Romantic longing. Smart dialogue. Bittersweet endings. Small character moments. Humor. Flirtiness. First times. Sex! Hope. Co-dependency. Nostalgia. Sarcasm. Forced marriages/fake relationships. Things that are left unsaid. Yearning. Time travel. Sleeping together without having sex.
Things I Would Prefer To Avoid: Major character death. Incest. Pregnancy/babies.
Moonlighting - David/Maddie
Anything Moonlighting, centered on David and Maddie. Casefic, slice of life, having a fight, flirting with each other, smut, crack (seriously, this show cries out for crazy fanfic/trope/meta plots), gen, missing scene - bring it on! The only thing I ask is that the story take place seasons 1-3ish, because they're my favorite.
I watched Moonlighting for the first time this summer, and fell in love with it. If it had aired at a time when fanfic was prevalent, it would have KILLED. Seriously, it has all the right ingredients - mad sexual tension, a framework that supports and endorses a wacky variety of setups and plots, a smart meta-awareness of itself and its genre (breaking the fourth wall, anybody?), and an underlying serious, grounded, and human relationship at its core. As it is, however, there is depressingly little good fic around for this amazing show. Go crazy here - I fully endorse whatever direction you decide to go in!
All of the Moonlighting seasons are available on DVD. Some of my favorites from seasons 1-3: Next Stop Murder, The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice, Twas the Episode Before Christmas, Atomic Shakespeare, and Big Man on Mulberry Street.
My Boys - PJ/Brendan
There isn't nearly enough of their relationship in the show. Anything from a story about their friendship (with a hint of something more perhaps) to smutty smuttasticness would be awesome. A few random ideas: College flashback. Five moments of great BFFery. A series of random hookups. A year of their friendship or relationship, done by the seasons of sports. Roommate life.
Exactly what it says on the tin. I adored the pair of them during the first season of My Boys (that embarrassed and pleased look on his face when they're discussing making out in college with their friends!), and I'm disappointed that they dropped their potential relationship and we will never see it again, now that the show is cancelled. *sigh* I love their chemistry, their easiness and shared history with each other, and the fact that he was totally crushing on her in college and couldn't bring himself to say anything. Oh, and please be kind to Bobby if you set the story during or after that relationship.
The first three seasons are available on DVD. The core P.J./Brendan relationship episode is in the first season: Baseball Myths.
Community - Jeff/Britta/Abed/Troy/Annie/Pierce/Shirley
Anything with the gang hanging out together, although if you throw in some Jeff/Annie (because I ship them like whoa) that would be the perfect cherry on top. But mostly, I'd love some ensemble humor and group bonding and friendship. Drinking together. A roundtable discussion of fandom/fanfiction. Strip poker (Pierce playing strip poker! He'd be way too into it.) Crazy Spanish or Anthropology assignments. A retelling of Modern Warfare or Epidemiology where the group stays together longer. This is my OT7 - they are nothing short of awesome.
This is a late addition to my Yuletide requests, because I just finished watching the first season DVDs and catching up on the current episodes and oh-my-gosh-this-show. It's hilarious and surreal with just the right amount of sweet mixed in with the tart. I really like how it's a true ensemble comedy, and I really enjoy that underneath everything you feel like these people are real friends. (Although, as Jeff points out, unlike a real family, there is also nothing to stop them to looking at each other as sexual prospects. *significant glances all around the table*) I get a kick out of how the show basically has, at some point, teased Everybody/Anybody as a ship. I'm very partial to Jeff/Annie - those two crazy kids have amazing (hot!) chemistry, so when you mix in a little forbidden romance with a sometimes sweet, sometimes protective, and sometimes argumentative relationship, well, let's just say I never stood a chance.
Season one of Community is out on DVD, and the last 30 days of the current season are available on Hulu to stream.
Shakespeare - Taming of the Shrew - Petruchio/Kate
Kiss me, Kate! I feel there is a real (and equal) relationship between Petruchio and Kate, and I'd love to read a fic that explores the themes of sexism, respect, anger, companionship, and hotness between the two of them.
We all have our go-to, smart-tongued Shakespearean gal. For many that's Beatrice (and rightfully so) but for me, that position belongs to Kate. She's fiery, sharp, and, at times, rather blindly angry. Petruchio, for all his talk of taming her, is obviously fascinated by and attracted to her character and vitality. I think there's more to The Taming of the Shrew than sexism - to me, there is a balance going on between how the characters act in public and private, and in the faces they show to each other and to everybody else. You know Petruchio and Kate totally had the hots for one another, and once they were married, fought out a truce behind the scenes and in the bedroom. I think that Kate ends the play, not tamed, but smarter.
The play can be found online.
Here's a copy on Google Books. Be awesome, Yuletide Writer. And thank you so much!
