As it turns out, my mum's concerns for my lack of culinary skills are completely justified...I literally set my dinner on fire the other night! I was lightly cooking taco shells in my toaster oven (as we don't have ovens where I live, no joke. Welcome to the student life, gas stoves and NO OVEN!), and the shelf must have been one level too high because after about 3 minutes the shells were burnt and smoking. I wasn't too concerned about this, just turned off the oven at the power point, and opened the door and turned on the fan to shoo the smoke away. Then Flake comes into the room and makes a casual comment about his garlic bread catching on fire the week before, which made me laugh until I turned around and saw my lovely tacos engulfed in flames inside my oven!! So at this point I start becoming hysterical (because if we set off the smoke alarm we get slapped with a $400 fine), as there is smoke billowing through our flat and my oven - a Christmas present - is pretty much on fire. So Taimur rushes in and grabs the fire extinguisher, then as Flake opens the oven door he extinguishes it! So not only did we have a kitchen full of smoke, but now white powder absolutely everywhere and me desperately covering the smoke alarm with an oven mitt. Somehow it didn't go off (which is slightly concerning as there was A LOT of smoke and the whole fire thing, etc) and all was resolved, but it was damn scary!!
Needless to say, I have been steering clear of anything requiring an oven lately haha.
