A toast to better health

Fantasy football draft, aka "Operation free chicken wings" was tons of fun. Buffalo Wild Wings promotional efforts ($100 in free food if you bring your buddies in our resteraunt to do your football draft here) worked again, as we all left bloated and leaking testosterone, all vowing to return to the scene of the crime to celebrate mid season one sunday afternoon with more wings... more beer. I am indeed fortunate to have such excellent friends and coworkers.

Last weekend we drove up to Cleveland TN, just north of Chattanooga, to river raft with 2 coworkers. We rafted the Ocoee river, home of the kayaking section for the olympic games. Chels and I agree that participating in outdoor adventures is a nice change of pace from the usual. After mentioning it to several friends amongst our immediate peer group, we found the idea of white water rafting appealed to more of our buddies than we might have previously thought. I think a FWC rafting trip may be in order.

After baphometmoon recommended and lent it to me, I've just finished reading Cormac McCarthy's book The Road. I have always enjoyed post-apocalyptic fiction (hellllllo Mad Max) but McCarthy takes it to a new level. I tore through it in 2 days, and strongly recommend it to those who don't spook easily: his is a ashen and barbaric earth that leaves you hard put deciding which poses the more potent peril: the elements themselves or what is left of the human race. Neither takes an ounce of pity, and both are capable of immobilizing and torturing body and soul. McCarthy never names either of the protagonists, nor does he give name to the extinction level event that has befallen earth. Unique takes on punctuation and exquisite word choice elevates an otherwise grizzly piece of fiction to prose levels. Apparently the Road was selected to Oprah's book club... a very moving book but, again, not for the faint of heart.

I've recently made further tweaks to my approach to health, and with surprising results. In addition to increasing the frequency of gym visits and/or yoga, I've also stopped drinking beer (except for last night... groan) and started taking additional herbal suppliments designed to improve insulin processing. Chromium and cinnamon pills? Yup. And the insulin required to get me through the day is down a total of 6-10 units so far. That is a BIG drop, and a welcome one.

I'm getting to where i crave physical activity. I'm hopeful I can talk the usual suspects into ramping up our schedule for weekend flag football outings or pick back up our efforts to get casual soccer games together on local parks and recs fields.
