After dinner, Chris and Mark went to the back of the Mess Hall, where a path ran along a lake, leading into a thick wood. At a point on the trail, Mark stopped him, withdrew some cigarettes, and lit one, offering the box to Chris, who accepted, though he'd never smoked before.
