what the???? sighs i'm doing my sociology reading and am pretty confused. every time i think i undersand what they are talking about i get confused again... i'm glad i can ask questions! i think i get the vague meaning... but i want to be sure ( Read more... )

Was this book written 200 years ago? My goodness that seems like a rather convoluted and archaic way of wording it... What, in the end, is the point? That a sense of "identity" is attributed to only a single instance of a "thing" (person, object, what have you), and that even if you had two apples side by side, they would not be identified as "the same" even though they are functionally equivalent?

i have no clue. it very well could of been written then! i know its written by a philosopher. the title had to do with diversity so i was interested... but then... sighs well you read it.

and as for what you got out if it i got more or less the same thing... um at least on that page.. so we'll see what happens in class!

Of course it does! We were born to write crap and be famous for it, don't you know. One day, they'll think our Nothing Book was a piece of great scientific work, and they'll make some poor class study it and get headaches.
(Personally, I'm of the opinion that most of the stuff these philosophers wrote was inspired by nothing but vast quantities of liquor...)
