Wikipedia will tell you
"Women's studies is an interdisciplinary academic field devoted to topics concerning women, feminism, gender, and politics. It often includes feminist theory, women's history (eg history of women's suffrage) and social history, women's literature, women's health, and the feminist and gender studies-influenced practice of most of the humanities and social sciences." and that can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women's_studies.

Strictly academically speaking this is a pretty accurate depiction, and an all around good definitive answer to the question of "what is women's studies ?". However how often do we live eat and breathe every moment of everyday in a strictly academic world? My point being that this definition meets some standards but leaves others wanting more then just academics.

I feel that women's studies is not only a way of viewing the world around us, but can also intertwine and effectively touch every aspect of our modern society.

Many people see women's studies as a female totalitarian spin on everything from child rearing to a business approach, where this is the case for some it does not rule all. Many things can have a feminist point of view without being totally overhauled.

So my definition of "What is Women's Studies?" goes as follows.
To me Women's studies is a mishmash of society, culture, sexuality, politics, economics, academics, and spirituality with a feminist touch. This may include but is never limited to Feminist history, Feminist theory, and all around Feminist culture. Women's studies can be a way of living life, raising children, running a business, or just academic study. What ever you chose to do in women's studies is good in my book so long as you do not push your collective view of this world or others on anyone.
I feel that when you stand for something so strongly and passionately that you start push your views on others in a forceful and intrusive way, you may have started to lose sight of what you real goals are.
So live and let live and enjoy the world around you in all of it's diverse wonderful glory.
