People, creativity on TV needs your help. Once again, an excellent show may be about to fall prey to the creatively-challenged PTB, in this case, Lifetime TV Executives.
BLOOD TIES (you can watch all the episodes online; the cast is
HERE) is the first series I've gotten hooked on after a looong drought of nothing, the first time I feel like reading fanfic again, maybe even write something. It's got it all: an ex-cop turned PI solving crimes with a caustic sense of humor, a delicious vampire of royal blood, the PI's ex-partner on the force (and in more ways than one), great stories, great "film noir" atmosphere, cool music, quick wit and humor... It really does have it all. So why even think of not renewing it?! Read on...
So what's all the fuss about? The setting: Toronto. The inspiration: Tanya Huff's Blood series of books, a great read, btw (see her blog on the show
HERE). Imagine a brilliant ex-cop, Vicky Nelson, now turned PI. Why? Because she is losing her eyesight to a disease and can't see well at night. So what does she do? Go out at night, of course, because that's what you do when you're hard-headed, you feel like you lost your one passion, you feel diminished and you want to prove something to yourself.
Naturally, things go bump in the night. Vicky maybe smart, beautiful, tough, but her world still turns upside down when she meets Henry Fitzroy, graphic artist with one particularity: he's a vampire. As in the real thing: the 450 years old bastard son of Henry VIII, turned at the tender age of 17. Through circumstances, Vicky and Henry team up to catch some evil baddies. Never far behind them is Mike Celluci, Vicky's ex-partner/lover, still on the force and still very protective of Vicky. What's a love triangle without a center piece to hold it together? That's Coreen's role, as Vicky's Gothette assistant with a knack for researching demons and ghouls.
The stories are very nicely written. The acting is great. The actors easy on the eye. The lighting, the cinematography, the "film noir" atmosphere, the mysteries, the love triangle, everything conspire to make you want more, more, more.
I was completely addicted to the series after only 4 episodes and couldn't wait for the second "season" (more like a half season, really) to air in October (the first season show last April-May.)
Despite Lifetime nasty attempts at killing the show (by sticking it at 11pm on Fridays, with no reruns, no publicity, almost no previews), the show has been getting quite a following. Lifetime's latest blow to the show was to not air the last 2 episodes of the season, but only show them on line. Fans are furious and waiting to hear if there will be a season 3.
Why not renew? Who knows? Supposedly, ratings were low. How could they not be after treating the show that way? Others also speculate that the interruption has to do with the WGA strike in some indirect way. More people think it may be due to a problem with the distribution company. Whatever the reason, we need to put the pressure on Lifetime and make them understand we are tired of seeing excellent shows disappear from TV before they were even given a chance to find a public.
