Autumn is here

Last night was the third time I covered some of my garden plants for a frost warning.  The first two times, there was nothing, and it's too dark to see yet this morning.  The silly hot peppers are only blooming just now, so I don't suppose I'll get any before they freeze.  But dammit, I'm keeping those plants going as long as I can.

I used to hear it's the frost that gets the leaves changing, but we haven't had one yet.  They began turning weeks ago, before it even got really chilly at night.  Can't be the change in the light, either, because then it would happen at the same time every year.  A couple of years ago they didn't really get going until November.  I think it depends more on what the Summer was like.  Eventually they just get tired.

I've had my fill of pumpkin already, until Thanksgiving, that is.  I did buy one store-bought pumpkin pie (that was too sweet).  Then, in my slow cooker, I made this pumpkin oatmeal recipe.  It was very tasty, and filling.  I used agave syrup for the honey (there really isn't much sugar in this at all), and I had to reduce the cooking time since mine is one of the newer, hotter slow cookers and a large one.  Probably 4 1/2 hours would have been enough.  Since I'm the only one in the house who eats it, it lasted me all week!  I'll have to make it again when my daughters are home.

For Thanksgiving, maybe I'll try a vegan pumpkin pie recipe.  And I really need to try to find a local free range turkey for the people who eat it.  I looked online a few weeks ago, but maybe it was too early.

It's lighter out now.  Still no frost, because it's cloudy and very foggy just like yesterday.  Time to go uncover the garden.
