Felt weaving

I spent a couple of hours in the craft room (read: the back half of the basement) fooling around today. I spent a while working on some paper models that just took punching out of a sheet of paper and folding tabs and whatnot. Then I tried out something I want to do with Christmas presents for my family. It's not working quite right but I think I know where to look for more info on how to fix it. Then I decided to do some felt weaving. I saw the project online somewhere and wanted to try it out.

I have no idea what to do with it. It's "eco-felt", which means it's made from plastic bottles - it's basically a stiff fleece. Which means it's probably not a good choice for a hot pad as the fibers will probably melt. It's not big enough for a lap blanket either - it's only 9x11". By the same token, it's a bit large for a coaster. Too lumpy as well. Any ideas?

I'm toying with using the method for making a wool lap blanket. I was thinking about making a set of 9 or 12 blocks like this, and using felted blanket binding to join the blocks and to edge the blanket.
