I'm excited by a chance to leave this place and open a new chapter in a new home. There is some nervousness, though, as my new apartment building does not have controlled access like this one does. You get what you pay for. I am trying hard not to harbor visions of the coming anarchy, when those in poverty and depressing circumstances over the hill a couple of blocks from here decide to take from those who seems relatively well off in comparison; those with the fortified garrets will feel less of the effect than those without. The people in my building are pretty well off, compared to me at least, in that they can afford, and don't mind paying for, over-priced studio apartments with crown molding and hard-wood floors. I no longer can so I've moved down the street a bit to a "modern construction" building with carpet and wonky windows. No molding here, and the only wood is in the squeaky, sticking cabinets in my open-floor-plan kitchenette - but at least there is no mold. The only things that really give me pause are the piece of pressed plywood that serves as my front door, and the fact that anyone can walk in off the street and onto any landing without a single barrier to speak of. The door is so light-weight that someone who presumably lived there threw something at it and punched two holes a couple of inches deep, and it appeared to partially hollow inside. And the other night, when my cab brought me home from the train after one of my late-night shifts, from my vantage point I could see that the two lights on the third floor landing, where my new place is, were out. I've spoken to the company that rented me the place, but they don't actually manage it so they said they'd pass the info on to the owners. This set up, where management goes through some middle man and has no direct contact with its tenants, is also something new for me. More things to make me go "hmmm". But as I've given my notice, my income level isn't seen as enough for most rental agencies, I can't afford to live further away from the transportation hub and the rent is in my price range, I'm going to take my chances. Worst comes to worst I can move out and just lose my deposit.
