Our lease was originally set to end on Aug. 31. David called the management company a few weeks ago to ask if they would consider letting us out of our lease early. The answer was an unequivocal no.

Not too long afterwards, we found out that the lead notification we got when we moved in 4 years ago - which stated that the management company was "not aware" of any lead hazards in the unit - basically meant that they had never bothered to check. Since our apartment building is probably 70-80 years old and not well kept up, there almost certainly were significant lead hazards in our apartment. Deleading can be very expensive, as in, tens of thousands of dollars. State law requires landlords to delead any housing where there are children under six, so I figured that our management company would happily let us out of our lease if it meant they would only lose a few thousand dollars, as opposed to 10-20K.

David called the company again today and told them we have a baby, and that we had recently become aware that the apartment was not deleaded. I had expected that they would require a bit of persuasion, but apparently they were very quick to agree to let us out of our lease. So we won't have to worry about finding someone to sublet, which is a huge relief.

Yayness.
