Friday, day three, was our hanging out with people day. We indeed got stood up by Johnny later in the night but we won't talk about what we could have done. We'll talk about what we did do!
We woke up kinda late which was nice. Sleeping in is win. We rarely get to do that. I sent my friend Brian a couple texts and set up lunch. We got dressed, and started the same transportation fiasco again. We had a fun time of figuring out trains because several were closed for maintenance, but it wasn't as bad as the coming weekend. We still ended up about an hour late for lunch. On the way to Brian's I saw this really pretty building with gorgeous fire escape swirls:
I love that kind of stuff.
Anyway, so we get there and Brian is wearing super cute huge bear slippers. LOL Bear feet! ROFL XD Anyway, he shows us around his place. I thought he still lived in Boston but apparently he's live there for about a year. Anyway, this house was AWESOME! There were something like 7 other artists living there so each room was new and interesting and different. I love people who have tons of old timey furniture. He also showed us a bunch of cute things like a Lolita dress (totally ita, but still sweet) that a fan gave him at the last Dresden Dolls show, a picture of his dad playing drums and a several pictures of Dr. Frankenfurter, which caused Ryan and I to reminisce. See, Ryan and I actually met 10 years ago at Rocky Horror. He was a sleazy fat kid with a mohawk, I was a thin goth girl in a school girl outfit. Who'd have thought all these years later we'd end up together?
Anyway, this is one of my favorite parts of the house tour:
It reminds me of the Matrix XD
Anyway, so after that he took us to this great old spooky cathedral called St John the Divine.
They were prepping for Halloween (I know, I was confused, to), with puppets, lighting and smoke. It looked a little Satany to me, but who am I to judge. It looked so cool! Apparently that night and Halloween they were going to be showing Nosferatu and playing the old silent film music on they church organs! And there were a LOT of them! Also, a lot of stuff in this church looked surprisingly Buddhist or Hindu...hmm...
When we walked in we saw:
Doesn't he look like "9"? It was HUGE! Apparently he was made by a famous puppet maker. And so was this other puppet:
I tried to get some video of him swaying back and forth, but he ended up being drawn back while they tested the smoke machines:
Spooooky nootchies!
Anyway, so we start touring to church. Brian was right, it was really spooky and beautiful. He told us a story about a musician who'd barged in protesting years ago and was escorted out by police and when the current congregation took over, they invited her back for a concert. Amazing stuff.
They had the "Poet's Corner" which had stones with the birth and death of famous writers. I got a few :)
As we went on there was more and more beauty. Also, apparently there'd been a fire, so there were certain area where you can see fire and water damage next to new pieces. It's still so lovely.
As we got closer to the stage, we noticed a great old circus looking open mouth stage. Then is started shooting out smoke! So rad!
The tour went on and it was pretty much just great, amazing and intricate art.
The boys:
INSANE stained glass:
Some of the water damage:
Where I think they keep ashes, it was very sobering:
I think they do baptisms here. Sorry, I don't know much about churches like this:
And the rest:
There are way more pictures if you want to look through them
on my Flickr. It was a lot to take in :)
So after we went through the cathedral, we went outside to what Brian called a scary, schizophrenic piece of artwork. And it was. This statue had SO much going on. Christian and Catholic art is pretty terrifying.
And I shit you not, this is a children's sculpture garden. See?
Interspersed all around the garden, around the scary, scary angel (yes, angel, crab, giraffes, hands on fire, water and severed head of Satan on a rope) were little kids sculptures cast in bronze. Behold!
There were more but I'm not going to post all of them. I really did like this one though:
So then, and this is my favorite thing ever, we hopped on a train and went to this yummy restaurant called French Roast. I will get to the yumminess in a bit. So we were on the subway and this CRAZY MOTHERFUCKER was spouting stuff about God, Jesus, the word, and how were were all disgusting because we were on a train together in close quarters and didn't even know each other. I LOVE when stereotypical Law and Order types of things happen when I'm in New York. It was so hilarious. But we were in rush hour so there were tons of people in the car and they were all getting pissed off by crazy guys crazy god ranting. He had this giant pole with some pretend book of God thing that looked like a choir folder with children's drawings on it. So he's shouting this and that and actually says, "And look at all of these people! They are all so close to each other and they don't even know each other. They are touching and they don't even know each other! That's disgusting!" And some guy in the best stereotypical NY accent says something like, "Hey! Move yer HOLY ASS!" It was great. Then, Brian who is pretty chill actually shouts, "I wish this guy would shut the fuck up!" As soon as he did, the guy got off at his stop. Classic. So the stop after that one was ours, we got out and walked to food, me giggling at the fodder for funny stories.
So yeah, this restaurant was awesome! They had good service, great food and Stella Artois. I had a burger with brie! Delicious! We were supposed to meet a friend at the Met, but we ended up having too much fun eating and chatting about life, travels and work. Then a couple of Brian's friends met up with us. After a while we parted ways in an "well will you look at the time!" kinda way and Ryan and I went on to the next thing.
I was being tickled :P
So we were too late to meet up with our friend at the Met, so she just met up with us at the restaurant and we went on to an area of town I'd never been to. It was near the Time Warner building.
The sun seemed to set quite quickly.
So after quite a bit of milling around taking touristy pics we ended up near Bowery at some Japanese place our friend's friend Jean picked out. It was mediocre. All it had going for it really was the hot Japanese boys.
So, after we left them we went to eat more food since the Japanese place had tiny servings (I had literally one and a half scallops and one piece of chicken). We ended up at an Irish bar called Central Bar. The food was moderately priced and nothing to write home about. I ended up getting skewers of chicken and beef, Stella Artois and Boddingtons. Ryan got a couple Jack and Cokes and Fish and Chips. The place was decked out for Halloween and was pretty cute. The service was really good.
Then a few Halloween types came in dressed as a superheroine, a girl-cop and male-prisoner and...WALDO! Apparently Where's Waldo was a huge costume this year.
I asked the guy for a picture and he got really excited XD He asked me how to pose and I told him to get behind the guy at the bar. Unfortunately a d-bag decided to be funny and fuck with my shot, but he's blurry now. Thank you Piknik:
Then we asked the waitress to take our picture:
But we looked huge, so I did it better :)
And that was that! We walked to a street where we could get a cab and went back to the hotel :)
:)
