Epic Wedding Post - Days 1-2: Late Flights and Legal Documents

Nov 04, 2009 13:00

Ready for it? Here it goes.

So Wednesday morning, we woke up around 8 and finished packing. Our flight didn't leave until 3:45ish so we figured we had some time. Miguel was coming over to take us to the airport, with coffee, so we were good :) Well, after getting most of our stuff in order, Miguel showed up. He had some cord or something to attach to the computer and while he was doing so, looked online and saw that Ryan did indeed need his birth certificate, even though everywhere we searched said we didn't. So, running late, we scoured the house for it, found it and zoomed off.

We got to the airport on time, the flight was running late because last week MN was FOREVER RAIN!

Annoying.

But it all worked out, since we running a tad late anyway. Luckily I'd checked in online that morning :)

The Horrible!!!!! part though was we happened to be stuck behind to most ill-behaved toddler of all time. We were next to a cute well behaved baby who smiled and played with me and in front of a little boy who was silent, but this horrible little girl kept antagonizing her older sister, screaming, crying and running around. And her stupid mother just kept saying, "Sit or butt down now or I'll [insert unbelievable punishment here]!" You know damn well she never follows through with throwing her kid out windows and the other stuff she said because that child ignored her like a pro.

So after two hours of that we landed in Atlanta, only to find out THAT flight was delayed. I took a picture of the time board, Ryan called me a tourist, I said, "No honey, when I blog about this later, I'll have proof of how stupid this is."

And I do:

So what did we do instead of go on to NYC? We ate food. We sure did. We're Midwestern, it's what we do.

So yeah, then we finally got on the plane after forever and a few uneventful hours later we were in NY LGA. Yay!

We hopped in a cab and went straight for the hotel. So a note, if you ever need to go to NY and find yourself spending most of your time in Manhattan, do NOT stay in Queens. It is too far and costs too much in cab fare to even get to the closest subway station. We would have had to walk 6-8 blocks to get to a bus to take us to a train if we wanted to save money, but it would have taken us about 2 hours each way every day. At least the hotel was nice!

The bed was huge, the bathroom was nice, the shower ruled and the TV was awesome. If you are able to stay in Queens without it hindering your trip, the Holiday in Express in Maspeth is great. Just don't book through a third party. Especially Travelocity. I will NEVER book through them again. The double charged us THREE days in a row. But I digress...

So the next morning we went to the City Clerk's office to get our marriage license!!!

It was funny, it went a lot faster than I'd assumed honestly. There weren't many people there and most of the people there were actually getting married there. We saw several couple's in makeshift wedding clothes and bouquets they'd bought there. We just waited our turn :)

So, we filled out the paperwork, I changed my name (yay!) and we left without a plan of what to do next, except giggle and talk about how in two days we'd be married. Ryan actually kept doing hourly countdowns throughout the time leading up to Halloween. It was very very cute.

After leaving we just kinda wandered around aimlessly. We went into a rad store called Antique Orange where I got the hoodie you'll see me wearing in every picture for the rest of the trip. Wait, let me back up. So we were expecting our insurance check from when I got rear-ended and Ernesto was going to overnight it to us. Didn't happened. Didn't come until Friday or Saturday. The hotel had decided they were going to put a $100 hold on our account which made it so we had about $87 to last us the weekend and we couldn't cash our roommate's rent check until the next day. Also, I'd left my coat in Miguel's car and he was overnighting it to me. It was very cold. Anyway, my parents generously gave us a gift and we were set for the next few days. I was able to get a nice warm hoodie and we were able to eat yummy food and have fun without being so worried. Anyway, so that cute hoodie was only about $20! Isn't that amazing!? So yeah, we left that store and kept walking until we got to a place called Yellow Rat Bastard. That store was AMAZING!

We weren't allowed to take pics but I snuck them anyway XD The sales associate totally looked the other way and didn't tell on me.

After bumming around there for awhile I decided I wanted to go to the Sanrio store and get a present :) So we hopped the train and went to Times Square. Ryan had gotten sick of his subway map so he actually found an app for his G1 and we were able to use that all week.

We went to Sanrio and I got this h.Naoto x Hello Kitty necklace, a phone charm and some lucky star candy.

We like being tourists in NYC. It's the one place we are fascinated by when it comes to all the touristy stuff. So we went to 30 Rock :)

After 30 Rock we went to St. Patrick's Cathedral. That place was overwhelming:

After we left, we bummed around some more, took more pictures:

Outside the park, while marathon prep was happening:

Then after getting stood up by Johnny, went to FAO Schwartz, then dinner.

Sidebar, on the way to dinner, we saw these statues!

Dinner at Yakiniku Izakaya Riki. We heartily recommend it:

And after a long day, we decided we were tired and kinda bored and that we should schlep back to the hotel :)

So we walked to the subway and saw this on the way:

These ads make me wish I liked gin :/

So yeah, we took the subway to the bowery, then hopped in a cab and went back to the hotel.
