i woke up this morning to find my laptop all kinds of dead... i get a BSOD with "unrecognizable boot section" or something close to that, chkdsk /r and /p go to 17% and say theres "one or more unrecoverable problems". while chkdsk with no argument says its fine... fixboot and fixmbr cant write a new boot sector. also, if there are simple ways to

1) a physical hard disk error such that you have a bad hard disk with little time to live
2) windows xp hiccupped and overwrote your boot partition. from what you've posted it looks like this isn't the case, and maybe it's something more serious.
3) something happened where the mbr and all backup ones (i guess there are backup ones...) were equally affected. I've done this under linux, and it's a pain in the ass to recover from.
In any case, the best advice is to somehow backup all your important stuff in case your hard drive is fried. Second option is to send it to IBM if it's under warranty, which I think it is. If you have any explicitly illegal stuff I guess I'd check to make sure IBM won't report you. But if it's just movies and mp3s and games, I wouldn't worry about it, since they can't prove you don't legally own all of it.
Accessing and doing stuff from the hidden partition might mean wiping your hard drive back to factory days. If you have a physical error with the hard disk using that option isn't likely to fix your problem permanently.
What are the error messages for fixboot and fixmbr, just out of curiosity?
Sorry if this seems rambling and incoherent... i'll post again when i have more time
