Some dumb ass kids from a nearby middle school thought it would be a nice thing to buy some donuts this morning for his classmates and teachers. Oh yeah, and sprinkle them with laxative and then hand them out in the hallways of the school. What would make 11-13 year olds do such a thing? Well they saw a similar prank done on MTV of course!
Ah children now-a-days are really lacking any creative ways to pull off pranks. Not that we had a lot of pranks in my middle school/high school years, just the typical fake bomb threat and there was once a pepper spray incident. But I think the point was that the kids of my generation (geez, look how I am dating myself) did it for the thrill or to get out a particular test. Kids today do it because they see it on t.v. and think that means it's cool.
MTV didn't even have "shows" back when I was that age. They were still playing music videos for the majority of the day. Do bands even make videos anymore? Why would they bother if MTV doesn't air them? When did MTV take such a dive? I think if they want to continue to show "reality based soap dramas" then they need to seriously change their name. You cannot call yourself "MTV" if there are no music videos. (and the 15 second clips they play of a video on TRL do not count!) Every time I flip on the channel I see a lovely show with spoiled bratty undeserving daddy's girls trying to impress all their friends with how much money they get to spend on their sweet 16 party. oh yeah, they also get a brand new BMW at the end wrapped in a bow.
Then there is that show where they try to pretend it's the "Real World" (because technically it is called "The Real World) but they can't fool us in our late 20's who remember when "The Real World" was a fresh take on a now cliched idea. It was about putting 7 strangers in a fancy house with nice ammenities to play their different cultural/religious/sexual/ backgrounds against one another. It had substance to it. This show worked well for a while. Until we started seeing the same kinds of people typecast: the naive person from the midwest, the angry black man, the slut, the one with the eating disorder, the gay male, the lesbian female, and some filler. It's all now a bunch of drinking, fighting and hooking up. There is none of that "freshness" that the early seasons had. There is no brain behind it anymore.
As for the other shows, I never seen them but I hear there is a dating game called "Next" where you pretty much judge your potential date on his/her appearance before having a conversation with them. That way you can decide right from the start that they are too ugly for you, you can get rid of them. Nice way to teach the value of inner beauty and personality.
There are also a slew of "comedy shows" but they seem like they came over from Nickelodeon with those group of teen stars. I don't get that.
More than the shows that they have added, I really miss the MUSIC! I loved the heyday of "Unplugged". Those were some good memories.
So in summary, if a child watches MTV today, he/she will most likely be immersed in images of pranks (Jack Ass, Punk'd anyone?) and shows about being materialistic and they will learn the lesson that they can judge someone based on how they look. It seems like the donut incident is just the start of things to come.
