I believe that the rise of reality TV is a rebellion against the manufactured-ness of typical television. Regular TV never put in enough honesty or depth...so reality TV stepped in to fill the void. So now TV viewers, instead of caring about fake people, can now care about carefully picked and generally not too spectacular people in a manufactured setting that are likely acting in somewhat guarded ways.
The appeal of television is that you don't have to do anything to consume it and you don't have to have anything interesting in your own life because you can live vicariously through others. It's the new children, but much easier and cheaper, streamlined for modern consumption.
