Book it 2006

Feb 08, 2006 16:02

I just discovered this nifty little community -- book_it_2006, and I think it's a cool idea. Basically, you discuss and track all of the books you read during the year. The idea is to read at least 50. I'm willing to give it a go.

Here's my first post in the project:

I just discovered this community and, I gotta say, I think this is a majorly cool idea. :)

Book 5: It Runs in the Family
Author: Ray Cooney
Genre: Stage Play/Comedy
Number of pages: 100
Pages Read This Year:1111
My rating of the book, F- [worst] to A [best]: A-

Short description/summary of the book: from Samuel French
Britain's master farceur (Two Into One, Run For Your Wife, et al. ) is at it again. Set in a hospital, It Runs in the Family contains the usual assortment of farcical nuts running in and out of doors mistaking everybody for someone else, as Dr. Mortimore tries to fend off a paternity suit, an ex wife, a punkish daughter and various other lunatics so that he may, at last, deliver the Ponsonby Lecture in an international conference. "My glasses steamed up with laughter.... A must for the bruised in spirit and the young at heart." Sunday Times, London . "Tickles the funny bones quite shamelessly." Sunday Express, London . "As in every good farce from Ben Travers to Joe Orton, the location becomes a madhouse filled with an epidemic of unbridled lunacy." London Financial Times.

My Thoughts:I read this book, a stage play, because I'm going to be directing it this spring at my local Playhouse. Dr. David Mortimore is about to deliver the Ponsonby Lecture, a prestigious address that will almost certainly propel his career into the stratosphere. On the day of the lecture, however, a nurse he had a dalliance with 18 years ago shows up with a teenage son he never knew existed. David and his sidekick Hubert begin piling lie on top of lie to protect his career, and things spiral completely out of control. The script is funny as heck (which is why I wanted to direct it), and a lot of fun.

Next Up: Either Dave Barry's Money Secrets by Dave Barry or It's Superman by Tom DeHaven

Since this is my first post in this little project, here's my rundown of the other books I've read so far:
Book #1: Ten Sure Signs a Movie Character is Doomed, and Other Surprising Movie Lists by Richard Roeper
Book #2: You Have the Right to Remain Dead by Pat Cook (Stage Play)
Book #3: The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Book #4: Superman: The Complete History by Les Daniels (Nonfiction)

books, book it 2006, it runs in the family
