Obligatory yeesh it's been a while.
Popping in to mention an awesome music site, with blurb written for
my radio show.
Southern Souls is a project put together by Mitch Fillion, which began in 2009 and originally featured bands from Southern Ontario, hence the name, Southern Souls. Inspired by other sites such as the
Black Cab Sessions and
Take Away Shows, Fillion wanders the area with an HD video camera and films musicians in their natural habitats, that is, on their streets and in their homes and favourite bars. Eventually he also began filming bands outside of the Southern Ontario region, and you can find brilliant, off-the-cuff, autotune-less performances on the site from musicians such as
Peter Katz,
Wax Mannequin, The Sheepdogs,
The Do,
Julie Fader,
Owen Pallett,
The Acorn,
The Wooden Sky,
Mother Mother and
Diamond Rings - in short, something under the indie rock umbrella for just about anyone.
I'd been meaning to mention Southern Souls on my show for some time, and in fact I've forgotten how I first heard about the programme. To my great delight, quite recently Fillion began uploading mp3s of performances alongside the beautifully rich and vibrant videos. He's also up for CBC Radio 3's Searchlight poll for the best Canadian Music site, and was recently added to the panel for this year's Polaris Music Prize.
My favourite track so far is by a band called the Elwins - they're from Newmarket ON - and the video is one I highly recommend checking out as well (which LiveJournal doesn't seem to want to embed).
The video begins in what I assume is the band's living room, collects another guitar player and percussionist on the way outside to the garage where the flutes and violins and drum set are waiting towards the end.
