Leaving. Saying good-bye. Farewell.
Every time they were able to meet ended with the question of whether or not there would be a next time. Of course they wanted to see each other, but no one could look into the future, and both knew all too well that their lives were dangerous ones.
As was their relationship.
Since one of them was already condemned it meant the gallows for both if they were ever caught; or leastwise dangerous inquiries if someone discovered anything suspicious in the commodore’s behaviour or property. Which was precisely the reason James never accepted whatever gift Jack offered him as remembrance. At least until today…
“Come on, luv,” Jack said. “No one will see anything else in it but what it is. Choose one, take it home, tell them you’ve found it somewhere down the road or whatever! No suspicion, no strange looks, you’ll see! At worst they’ll call you a Good Samaritan for giving it shelter and food.”
James sighed and finally nodded.
“I suppose you are right and this is indeed the only innocuous thing I can take off the Pearl…”
“Then you’ll take one?” Jack beamed in joy.
“I will. The black and red one, I think,” James replied, bent down and gently lifted one of the kittens from their makeshift bed of sail cloth rags. The little animal meowed, but instantly quieted and instead started to purr when James began to stroke its small head, then relaxed into his tender hold.
“Seems it’s already happy with its new companion,” Jack stated and kissed his lover’s cheek. “As am I,” he added, with a wink.
