Normally I'm not one to promote whatever is in the media of late. I don't go to many movies because most of the ones that are out these days are formulaic and suck rocks. I don't listen to top 40 radio stations because the music is likewise.
However, in the Fall I saw the film
Across the Universe in theatres. I thought it was awesome, not just because I'm a huge Beatles fan (which I am) but because it was a really well done film in many respects. I did something I almost never do, which is go see a movie in the theatre a second time to catch more of the visuals again on the big screen.
Right after seeing the film I went out to get the soundtrack (and got the 2-CD version). Today was the day the DVD came out (2-disc) and I've already got it in my hot little hands.
You don't have to be a Beatles fan to enjoy the movie. While the music is all from the Beatles, it's visually, musically and dramatically interesting even if you're not. If you are a Beatles fan, there are a zillion little Beatles references you'd notice that otherwise wouldn't mean much. Even though the film contains no Beatles in it, the whole thing is filled with names from their songs, references to their lives as individuals and as a group, and to their ideals and values.
But it's also filled with pretty cinematography in bright colours and has a cameo from Selma Hyek, Bono, Eddie Izzard and one or two others.
Go'waaaaan. Watch the film!
