Title: Almost There

The usual faint hum of machinery reverberated around the depths of the base, as it had done every day for the last year.
Jack stood as always, arms stretched apart, wrists secured with metal cuffs and chains to the walls. His clothes were torn, body covered in dirt and sweat. The normally immaculately ruffled hair was lank and dull.
The other captives, being used as servants, were watched by a pair of blue eyes still shining, bright and alert. Eyes still filled with amusement and warmth in spite of the situation he’d been in for the past year. But hidden in those azure depths there was a hardness, determination and viciousness that was always there, but rarely let out. For now, it was waiting. Watching the clock.
His head came up, suddenly alert, triggered by a smell, bringing back memories. Memories of a soft lilting accent and a pair of grey blue eyes. Eyes that were usually sad and lost, but that sent shivers down his spine when filled with rare amusement.
He looked to the side. Watched the countdown. 4, 3, 2, 1, 0.
