Enough is enough

I think they should have more dwarves on Supernatural. In the interest of fairness, I'd demand the inclusion of little people in at least every other episode, and their characters should be more relevant to the mytharc and the hero aspects of the show. They are so underrepresented in America and in the media as opposed to the contributions they ( Read more... )

Hm.

She left out Russell. Who is not evil and does not die. She also left out the painter guy from "Crossroad Blues". Who *does* die, but is not evil.

I think she needs to be a bit more comprehensive in her complaining.

I'm still trying to figure out her original complaint!

Is it that they only last for one episode? Um, newsflash, but most characters on this show don't - nothing to do with color.

Is it that they are usually evil? Um, because on the show I watch, it's pretty even regarding color and character in that department.

Is it that she thinks that black characters are more evil than white on the whole? Because, I'm sorry, I don't think they cast Lucifer to be played by a black man. Or Ruby. Or Bela. Or...

I AM SO CONFUSED.

Her complaint is:

- There aren't enough black characters and that's unrealistic.
- The few black women who have appeared have never been breathed of again, even when significant figures (Cassie, Missouri). Some white characters who only last one episode have been mentioned again.
- As you say, the majority of the characters on this show only last for one episode - but all of those who last longer are white. Don't be an idiot, smallcaps; Gordon, Hendricksen and Uriel. Man, it's almost as though those three characters have something in common. Look at the big scary black man who will kill you even if he thinks he's doing good!
- Likewise, many characters are evil - but there are also far more not-evil whites than blacks. Whites get to play a wider range of characters. And whites aren't currently the subject of damaging stereotypes in countries like the US so that even if the proportions matched it is still an insidious and damaging message to send about black people.

Show may take place in the deep south - SOMETIMES - but how many African Americans are there wandering around B.C. that want to be extras, hmm?

HOW MANY, I ASK YOU.

I don't know about African Americans, but in terms of black Canadians, Wikipedia says:

Black Canadians - 783,795 (2.5% of Canadian population)
Black British - 1,900,000 (3.0% of British population)
African Americans - 39,500,000 (12.4% of American population)

The percentage is lower, but not nonexistent. Also says:

Media representation of Blacks in Canada has increased significantly in recent years, with television series such as Drop the Beat, Lord Have Mercy and Da Kink in My Hair focusing principally on Black characters and communities.

The films of Clement Virgo and Sudz Sutherland have been among the most prominent depictions of Black Canadians on the big screen.

which suggests there are black Canadian actors out there.

None of which is really the point.

That's a good point, about that not being the point. Actually, the point seems to have gotten lost somewhere. Have you seen it?

It showed up for one episode and was then never heard from again. ;)

Why, were they only in 1 episode??

Apparently, since there only seems to be one point per, right?

Actually, the point is probably just lost in craft services, stuffing its face.

- How many black characters would be considered sufficiently "enough" or "realistic"? An average or percentage is fine.

- The two characters you mentioned (and also the actress who played Tamara) are busy on other shows. So, if you're arguing that there isn't enough work for black female actors, I guess that's... not true. If it's because the very IDEA of Cassie isn't sufficiently echoed in the very fact that Dean just can't seem to hang it with ANY other woman after that (kinda like how episodes about Dean are really also about Sam even though he's not there) then that's kinda... wait. Was it only white fangirls who hated Cassie? I missed that train. Or is this about how they were only on one episode, right? Because you know we ALL LOVED the repeats like Jo and Ellen and... oh WAIT.

- Gordon, Henriksen, Uriel. Sam, Dean, Castiel. If you're making allusions to the dark side of your main character's character, doesn't it make SENSE TO MAKE THEM BLACK AS A VISUAL REFERENCE TO THEIR MORAL OPPOSITE? I'm sorry that black hats make you ( ... )

I'm going to say, very flippantly, 12.4% - including background (and now I'm gonna have to go through and run the numbers because I think we can make that for foreground characters \0/)

However, that's me being flippant, because I am obviously not the arbiter of What Is Unconsciously Racist And What Isn't.

I am not talking about Cassie and Missouri reappearing, I am talking about them being mentioned again, which you would expect them to be given their roles in the boys' lives. Instead, the pet psychic of season four was a hot white chick, no reference to a psychic they knew before. Dean didn't even mention Cassie while reading Route 666. Some white characters who only appeared in one episode have been mentioned again. You said you were still trying to figure out the original poster's original complaint, and this was one of them.

(Jo and Ellen have also been mentioned again, for the record, so I don't know why you're bringing them up.)

- Gordon, Henriksen, Uriel. Sam, Dean, Castiel. If you're making allusions to the dark ( ... )

NO BECAUSE THAT IS IMPLYING THAT BLACK SKINNED PEOPLE REPRESENT EVIL.

Yeah, see, even *I* caught that, and it's been about 15 years since my postmodern feminist film criticism courses.
