I think he let the whole, "being on Chappelle's show" thing get to his head when it comes to the hood pass.

I can't think of any other reason why that would occur to him.

I didn't know who John Mayer was. Had to look him up. Any white guy who says "black people love me" is probably one of the ones who thinks he's not racist at all-- yet he's MORE racist than average. (Or maybe he's just average and we find out about it more since he speaks his mind)

The sound you hear is millions of white guys who think they are at lest progressive, or "gosh I'm not from the south so how could I be racist" thinking "OMG what was WRONG with what he said! He CAN'T help it. OMG."
