"It is they; they who choose the normal, that choose the mundane, that choose the ordinary. They are our enemies." ...
Friends are those that will appreciate who you are, not what they think you should be or what they think you should become. A friend is someone who will accept you in the beginning of the relationship, and respect your differences next to your faults; not someone who constantly seeks for improvement in your being. A true friend will realize that no one ever really "knows" an entire persona, no matter how long you've been friends; no matter how many experiences you have had with each other.
Two people in a friendship should be equal; not one seeing another arrogantly, as inferior to themselves. Each, if they truely believe in the friendship will geninuely care about what's going on in the others life; not just what is interesting to the listener. To truely care for someone else, particulary platonically, is to realize that everyone has worries, everyone has fears, everyone has things that he or she hates about themself. A true friend will not find and learn these weaknesses, merely to exploit and humiliate another person, to make themself feel better.
Friendship is a cycle of give and take.
One person can not only ever take, or only ever give; for it will eventually destroy both individuals. Friendship is not a responsibility; but a gift. Friendship is looking for what the other needs, and trying to provide it in the best balanced way for both individuals. Friendship involves willing sacrifice and forgiveness; it is a volunteer act, which is not required by the laws of life or the laws of nature, but rather is given freely because the giver desires to do so, not because there is simply sympathy and apathy towards the recipient. Friendship is time, energy, and positive reinforcement; it must first be realized that there are enough people in the world that seek merely to tear down the weak, only to make them weaker; but a friend should be interested in supporting the weak with strength, to become stronger.
Without these things there cannot be friendship; only animosity. Without these things there cannot be love or loyalty; merely illusion and distrust. Without these things; there is nothing to continue.
