My friends are the best. You see, even though I only live about 2 hours from New York city, I have never been. When
madamekat found out,, she was appalled and was quick to remedy the situation. So yesterday she, along with
ladyxjade, and
dragoneyes19 took me up to Manhattan to go fabric shopping and see the Met. Thanks to Judy's mad cab driver like skills, we made it up there just around 11. We parked at the museum and took the subway over the the fashion district to go shopping. Robin, having lived there before, showed us all the best places, including one that had been going out of business for years. After we all splurged a bit, we had lunch at Ben's deli and took the subway back to the upper east side. We made a quick stop to Laduree's ( minus the 20 min wait outside) for some treats, then back to the Met to drop off our things. Then we saw the Impressionism and fashion exhibit, which is amazing. I was impressed by how closely the extant garments matched some in the paintings. And there was a room dedicated to black gowns, and only once was mourning mentioned, and that was to say that the jewelry shows that it was NOT a mourning gown. How refreshing. And I found my next Victorian dress, but more on that later. We then went looking for some champagne but found the museum prices a bit too high, so we settled for some dinner. Then we visited the regency rooms ( need one of those too) and the Egyptian wing. We only got to go halfway through those two since they were closing and kicking us out. So it was out to brave the tunnel traffic and make our way home.
And now for the spoils
:
I got cotton lawn for an 18th century summer dress, two rhinestone buckles the softest petersham ribbon ever, a ton of hook and eye tape ( I love that stuff) and of course the macaroons.
