This is not the apocalypse I ordered

I met my writing goals for January--all right, I didn't meet the original goals, which were to finish the novella and get at least 20k into the novel. But I regrouped, I set new goals, and behold:

"The Curse of Four"

Things accomplished in fiction: Got arrested again, threw up on a cop's shoes, made a deal with a very bad sort of person, finally found the man behind the curtain.

Things accomplished in real life: Ate a lot of food, took a friend around town for some touristing. I know, I know...so productive.

Other: Well, I appear to have caused one reader flounce over the issue of the Amazon/Macmillan flap. They think I should be mad at my publisher for charging so much for those darn pesky e-books instead of Amazon for yanking NOT ONLY the e-book listings but ALL of my listings, print, electronic and stone tablet alike. On the off chance they're still reading, here's Tobias Buckell's very informative post on the true cost to produce an e-book. (Short version: they cost actual dollars for conversion, formatting and a host of other processes with analogues in the print world. Books of all formats require production. Shocking.) The reader asked me why I was mad at Amazon and not my publisher. Simple. At this moment in time, Amazon is fucking with my livelihood. And for the close readers, they'll notice I said in my last post Macmillan is not innocent in all this. I think both sides behaved abominably, but when it comes down to it, this is my job, and the sole way I make a living. Macmillan is trying to figure out a way to offer me a sustainable wage. I'm irritated about their methods, but I'm not angry with them for trying to find a way to pay the people that produce their product fairly.

I guess I'll just have to go without a latte today to recoup the $7.99 I lost by being honest about my feelings on my own blog...

Whew! Can you tell I'm a wee bit irritable today? Strange how that happens to people when corporations start messing with their income over something that was boardroom dispute at best, eh?

Anyway. Enough. No more FAIL on the blog (and please keep the fail out of the comments. I'm in a bad mood and I'll likely just delete them.) Back to writing goals:

6,000 words to revise and one ending to find. Not so bad. My due date is 2/15, which should be do-able, since Valentine's Day always whips me into a frenzy of single-person loathing and I get a lot of work done. Today, however, I have to get back to Bone Gods (sitting at a respectable 13k) and start "Born Under a Bad Sign", which needs to come in at around 10k.

Oh, and do my taxes.

If anyone sees my WIN wandering around, please give it back to me.
