Bookeeping:
6. Justine Musk, Uninvited
I picked up Justine's YA novel while we were both signing our respective tomes at Dark Delicacies in LA. It's a twisted little story, and reminds me of a cross between a Supernatural episode and something Francesca Lia Block might pen if she were in a really dark mood. Except there aren't any demons here, any angels, or any easy answers for Kelly, the heroine or her brother Jasper, who's returned from a journey with a companion...a companion that can bend reality and has designs on Kelly. Uninvited isn't about fighting your personal demons, to my read. It's about accepting that everyone does have them, and how best to make peace with the "abyss" in all of us. The story's not twisty or action-packed, but it is very, very satisfying and the writing is a notch above most paranormal YA. The real standout for me was the monsters--wholly unique, fully realized characters, and utterly menacing without any YA sugarcoating. I do love a good monster.

Speaking of monsters, "Perdition" is clicking along, and Amazon delivered my biography of Doc Holliday this morning. I can haz fact checking!
"Perdition"
Things accomplished in fiction: Threw Doc into the middle of some vampires, had Kate discover the Awful Truth, obliquely paralleled real-life Holliday lore in scene. Metatext ftw.
Things accomplished in real life: De-furred furniture, braved the wilds of Target for laundry soap and cheap Easter candy.
My new office sofa just arrived, and it falls to me to set it up, so I'm off. And will soon be sitting comfortably.
