...or you'll be left behinnnnnd

I talked with Andrew (restaurant job friend in Edinburgh) online for a good hour the other day. We were both talking/bitching about jobs and life. He was talking about how he doesn't just want a job, he wants a career and a passion. And it's frustrating that even though he has a 2-3 degrees in architecture, it's almost impossible for him to find a job. Some guy from the top of his class just got a job in Stockholm, but he is one of the few. At least Andrew knows exactly what he wants to do... I'm still kind of lost.

Somehow I never really thought about that concept... loving your job has always sounded like something kind of rare. I mean, neither of my parents were "passionate" about their jobs. The things I'm passionate about usually lay outside the realm of the 9 to 5. He told me I should "find something you're good at and then charge somebody for it!" and I was like yeah, if only. But it got me thinking about the future a little more.

So I think I'm going to get a degree in library science, with a focus on being an archivist. St. Catherine's has a program, but it's not ALA (American Library Association) approved. Most librarian jobs require a degree from an ALA approved program. The St. Catherine program is up for review in 2010, and they will decide in 2011 whether to grant St. Kate's accredation or not. All library science degrees granted by St. Kate's since 2009 will be retroactively ALA approved. Some archivist jobs require an ALA approved degree as well. So it would be a risk, but I definitely want to stay in Minnesota... My awesome aunt who works at St. Olaf is going to get me in touch with a few archivists she knows, and I will see what they think. There are no ALA approved programs in Minnesota, the closest is in Madison, WI. I read that I might be able to take classes online... I'll look into that too.

Sigh. Feeling a little better.

Derby is going very well. Had a good night tonight... went out for beer and wings after practice with Mae and some of the Twin Cities Terrors (men's derby team) and MNRG refs (the TCT scrimmaged against MNRG on the other side of the Roy during practice today). I met a nice ref and talked to her about jobs, unemployment, and my librarian/archivist aspirations. She made a joke about "and then someday if you find a Slayer you can become a Watcher..." and I was like FUCK YEAH Buffy reference. Ahahahaha. She also tells me that Buffy the Vampire Skater (formerly of MNRG's Atomic Bombshells) didn't even like the show. Weird.

Also Wet Spot pretty much said that I am #1 or #2 draft pick. If you want to hear me babble about the chances of me getting on the team I want to, call me. I almost just wrote it all down but I think that no one cares that much but me.

My sister and her boyfriend are flying in tomorrow, and I'm really excited to spend the rest of the week / the weekend with them at the lake. Packing time!

passion?, roller derby, career, hearts, job, more vacation, draft
