Thirty NEEN returns home!

Jan 11, 2007 14:25

So, thanks to technology, last night whilst sleeping very uneasily thanks to this cold (yes, I'm at home, I actually called in sick!!!), I got a text message from friend Erik with some deightful news!

"Did you hear the Leafs re-acquired thirty-neen Travis Green"

WHAT?!

And then this morning, on his way to school, my brother, who has decided to be strangely nice to me whilst I am under the weather ("Do you want me to go to Shoppers and buy you some cough drops?" "Do you want some soup?" "Do you need anything before I go to school?") phoned home to tell me the same news (I'm assuming he was looking at the Metro or something).

WHAT??!!

So, up I get, hauling my tired sick body out of bed to confirm this joyous news, and I spot the Star sitting on the bench in our hall, waiting, just WAITING to be read. I calm myself, and open the front page, determined to read the paper like a sane person and not just gobble up the sports page (like I would usually do). Sometimes, good things come to those who wait. And finally, I get to the sports section and see it...the Leafs got him off waivers from the Ducks (who, incidentally, are no longer "Mighty" in name), and he's flown in to be in his first game as a Maple Leaf AGAIN tonight against Buffalo! WOOT!! I am so stoked! I love thirty neen! And yes, here is the story behind his nickname from me and Erik.

Whilst watching hockey some years ago, around 2001, 2002, I worked my brain to memorize the players' numbers so that I wouldn't always have to be asking Erik, or Brian, or Ren, "Who's that?" So...Sundin was 13, and it rhymed, and so Travis Green, 39, became "thirty neen". Hey, it worked for me, and he's been called that ever since.

Anyway, I'm glad he's back. I enjoyed his play, and his excitement, especially during the 2002 play offs run, when we were playing game 7 aginst the Canes, and we were down one, and in the last 20 seconds, we tied it up, and he was jumping up and down in the bench like a little kid! No longer a little kid (seeing as he's 36!), he's still my thirty neen, and maybe that's a good wind blowing for Toronto. Yay!

I think I must go to a movie theatre tonight to watch the game, even if I'm still sniffly! Can't miss out on Thirty neen's return!!! Stupid Leafs TV!

In other hockey news, Leafs lost the other night against the Canes. Seats were good though, if I knew how to get photos off of my phone onto my computer, I'd post 'em. I think that requires a cable that I have to buy.

nostalgia, hockey, leafs loss
