The story of The Snow Queen begins with the devil making a distorting mirror which reflects everything good and beautiful as ugly and evil. The devil's minions attempt to take the mirror up to Heaven in order to plague the angels but on the way there it slips from their grasp. The mirror falls and shatters into millions of tiny pieces and every person who got a sliver in their eye could no longer see anything beautiful. People pierced through the chest had their hearts freeze in to lumps of ice so that they could no longer feel empathy or love.
When I was a kid I was very upset by this part of the story because even though I knew that Kay would be saved by Gerda it seemed as though everyone else in the world was pretty much screwed.
Now of course I don't really care*... I think.
