2nd day in NYC

Dec 04, 2017 17:42

We visited the MET which stands for Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York for half a day.

Entry was free but they do expect a small donation. We uber there as for a family of 5, the fare between uber and subway is not significantly different for short distance.

The MET is big and contains art exhibits from different parts of the world. Some of the exhibits is so huge that I wonder how they manage to transport it there, like a temple from Egypt.

Inside the Temple of Dendur.
See the temple entrance, the whole structure is huge.

The beautiful Charles Engelhard Court in the American Wing, they were marvelling at the statue of Diana.

She said that's the statue of Wonder Woman.

We took a short break at the cafe besides this beautiful courtyard that overlooks Central Park.

View of Central Park

There's a Chinese section and this Chinese garden portrays some fengshui elements.

George Washington who became the first President at age 57, the same time when he extracted all his teeth and replaced them with the fake ivory ones as he's been plagued by toothache.

Thomas Jefferson, the third President of USA. He drafted the Declaration of Independence and is honored on the United States two-dollar bill and nickel.

The statue of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of America. He is most famous for leading the country during the American Civil War and for his fight against slavery.

Resting and admiring the painting. The collection of paintings is overwhelming so one game I devised is for each of us to choose our favourite painting in each gallery we entered.

One that I like.

Another one I like

These are all from the American wing.

We saw a few artists trying to reproduce the same painting as those in the gallery and they are all pretty amazing.

Ashley was most excited when she could identify some of the paintings and artists she learned in school.

She learned that Edgar Degas eyesight wasn't good when he grew older and he switched to doing more sculptures than paintings.

A painting using Pointillism.

Andrea pointed out that this is a famous painting depicting George Washington crossing the Delaware River to launch an attack on the British.

We were pretty famished by 3:30 pm and left the museum for this restaurant Burger & Lobster.

We had a great meal, burger with beef, lobster, truffle mayo, lobster roll ... it was yummy and very satisfying.
I like it that the restaurant is huge and there's even a bar area where you can get lobster bites at half the price off the menu.

The restaurant is a short walk away to the Union Square holiday market.
This is a very neat Christmas market.

We walked around a little then took the subway to Times Square.

Times Square is filled with malls and bright lights.

usa, holiday
