Ah.
The Olympics are over. Once again I missed completely the opening and closing ceremonies (well, the closing I somewhat intentionally missed, since I didn't' see the opening), which sucks; I have yet to actually catch the ceremonies. It seams that this year's ceremonies were quiet entertaining - Mary Poppins, James Bond.... favorite movie characters of mine.....
Oh and the coverage of the games were not done well. I understand only televising the sports that would be the most interesting - and further splitting up what to show for prime time hours, though it does suck for the sports that are "second tier popular" as they only show parts of the competition rounds. However, they had far too many lame inserts - unnecessary "specials" and segments that didn't need to be broadcasted in the middle of the broadcasting block. Of the Ryan Secrest segments that I saw...they were just pure stupidity. And then there was on segment where one of the people on the reporting team made some really uneducated comments about the various countries flag he was looking at - seriously, you should study up on the flags of other countries before you open your stupid mouth to comment on shit you don't know on National Television. Nice way prove the stupidity of Americans in regards to the acknowledgement of their very existence, idiot.
So the only way to watch other sports, or to watch the sport you wanted to watch at the actual time it took place, was either by the other couple of NBC channels if you happen to have them, or you could watch them streaming online or via app on your phone. The online/app options however, were poor and hardly options if you didn't have cable, or the cable wasn't in your name, the latter being my issue. The "free" app/online viewing wasn't truly free. The things via the app that you could see without a cable subscription where the sports (or segments of sports) that were going to be shown on TV anyway, and where only not showing at the moment because of delay (stuff showing during the day on the main NBC channel were somewhat live) or it was being saved until prime time. I also heard the streams were often bad in one way or another, - and there were problems with the notifications - spoiling the results before getting to see the event - but as I couldn't really use the app anyway, I can't say much on this.
There are other complaints about NBC's coverage, and apparently there's quite a bit, as I saw articles being written about it. I do hope someone else will get rights to coverage- or at the very least, not have the coverage being exclusively NBC for the next Olympics. ESPN would be nice. Number one, however, should be that the Olympics is a World Event - especially with the internet and such, there should be more options to viewing the sports of the Olympics - and it should be open to all - truly open to all.
Just think of all the viewers Ads will get- there you go, money made, NBC. Assholes.
Anyway, its about all I watched for the past two weeks. Some really great moments, particularly in Gymnastics, Swimming, and Athletics: Track sports. Gotta love the sportsman ship that you find in this level of competition (well there are always exceptions- like that shit with Badminton - why the fuck is this an Olympic sport?).
That's another thing, there are a few sports that I don't think should be an Olympic sport - and i'm not entirely in favor of NBA professional players being allowed to play in the Olympics. I should say, I see both sides of the "why" and "why not" of that issue. In general, I'm not really in support of Basketball being an Olympic sport, either. This was actually the only sport shown on the main NBC channel that I flat out intentionally didn't watch.
I watched everything else though; even sports that I don't know much of, or follow- like the equestrian stuff, rowing, the kyacking and canoe sports..... it's great to be able to watch sports you wouldn't normally watch, or even see outside of the Olympics. Another awesome aspect of the Olympics.
Okay enough rambling. So the next Olympics are in Rio. Brazil with an Olympics.... should be interesting; wonder how they are going to pull this off.
