Merlin and Arthur's Room, A Hotel in Vancouver, Monday Evening

Aug 11, 2009 05:43

On the upside, Arthur didn't know enough about local standards to recognise that the hotel they were in was not of the best quality available. That meant that everyone present was at least spared that amount of thrown fits or whining or irrationality of any stripe ( Read more... )

Knock knock, knock knock!

"Room service!"

So not.

The door swung open.

"You're not room service," Arthur told her, pointedly.

"I have chips though," Dinah said, holding up a bag of pretzels and a bag of Ranch flavor Doritos. "And drinks. If it's good enough for the writer's pen, it's good enough for you guys."

"You're not even servicable," Arthur continued, blithely, "And we've placed our orders already."

The kind of stuff that would require a country to consume, yes.

"Fine then I'll eat it by myself," Dinah said, making to duck under his arm and into the room if he didn't stop her.

He was a broad medieval knight. She was a muscled and not entirely spindly young woman.

It was still a match lost by default, as Arthur moved to block her off quite effectively. "You do need to feed all of that jumping around you do."

Hmmm. Thwarted. But not yet booted. Dinah gave him a considering look, and said, "Well, yes. Except for when I'm playing dead. And the telekinesis, for fighting demons and all." She tried to sidle sideways, very carefully, because rough-housing in a hotel hallway was totally a good way to get security in there. Plus she had chips and pop she didn't want to damage!

Arthur rather maturely shifted sideways as well, giving her a quick raise of the eyebrows and a not entirely genuine (or at least very much mocking) smile as he did so. "Yes, and we're all very proud of you."

Arthur, you patronising doof.

Eyes narrowing to squinty lines, Dinah was having one of those moments where she questioned whey she didn't just cheat and move him out of her way with the TK; except it would be cheating, and they both knew it, and they both knew she wouldn't, except someday, buddy, someday!

"As you should be, if you had anything to do with it, which you don't, 'cause you don't train me in that," Dinah said without pausing for breath, then paused to consider, and bounced on her toes. A distraction for another step back then forward. "I should call Professor Atreides again, and let her know how it's going."

Everything seemed to come down to Lady Ghanima, didn't it? "You might have noticed the word 'we'," he said, idly. "Do you have some kind of trouble standing still? Would you like me to help?"

How to say, you could let me in the room without being too abrupt and invite a dismissal? "You could stop being a roadblock," Dinah pointed out, trying for innocent. "Look, I brought food to pay the toll!"

"Merlin's sleeping," Arthur shot back. Not that he was protective, or anything.

"Oh." Oh. Dinah immediately deflated, biting her lip and staring at the door, not looking Arthur. Right. Be an adult, Lance. You can handle one hotel room in a strange city by yourself. You don't even have to sleep, right? Right. Reaching for exasperation and only getting halfway there, Dinah muttered, "Well, you could have just said. Sorry. Never mind." And turned to go back to her room.

With a sigh, Arthur... closed the door behind him. He was not equipped to deal with upset girls all the time. He was not planning to deal with this one, but-- "You could order more room service," he called.

... Smart, Arthur.

As usual, Dinah didn't get the indirect suggestion for a second, and was about to ask why would I want more room service? I have chips! when the sideways offer became clear. Right, now that was embarrassing. Being obvious around Arthur always was.

"Um." She paused, then quickly offered, "I could order fries, or chips. Just to split. That wouldn't take long to eat, right?"

"You had snacks," he said, "There's chairs out in the hall."

Apparently ingrained responses now meant he was going to wind up spending fifteen minutes eating chips out in the hall with an overly bouncy girl. Brilliant.
