John McCain and Sarah Palin have used the word "maverick" so damn much it is getting burned out. I remember when it was first used in the campaign the old TV show with James Garner called "Maverick" came to mind. As well many years later the movie with James Garner and Mel Gibson of the same name and continuation of the TV shows story.
