I mentioned earlier that I would write about last Saturday evening, so here it is.
We had plans to go to a party at one of my co-worker's house. So we planned to have a sitter for Miss M. so we could have an adult night out. About 3 that afternoon, my co-worker sent a text that the party was canceled due to a family emergency. Since we already had the sitter lined up we decided to spend an evening out together. First we considered going to a movie, that is until we looked up what movies were playing. Not seeing anything either of us was interested in, we decided to just go to dinner and dessert.
We ended up going to a Chinese restaurant we both like near downtown. The last couple times we were there, we had been on a schedule, and the service was very slow. Of course because time wasn't an issue this go around, they were very fast and efficient. Dinner was great except for a very personal conversation going on two booths away that we could hear as if we were sitting at the same table.
Afterward we walked to the
Konditorei, which is a fabulous dessert shop in town that specializes in cakes. It was pretty crowded but we were able to find a place to sit by the window to share a piece of champagne raspberry cake. A slightly older couple sitting at a table about 3 feet away started talking to us about the economy. We kept conversation with perfect strangers for about half an hour, discussing everything from politics, to travelling, to parenting. It felt really good to make that connection with a stranger neighbor in the community. It seems there is less and less of that these days. It made me glad we did not go to the movies instead.
Mostly though it was just nice to have an evening without a schedule, to do what we pleased at our own pace.
