Eighth Eden

[There's a strong feeling of deja vu out of all this. Clod has witnessed the end of her world. Hell, not only did she witness it, she was a major factor in its progression. When civil wars broke out worldwide and the experimentations continued, she was the one that ended it all by spreading the same madness that she had been subjected to. Her body ( Read more... )

[Pokey gets himself a glass and takes a seat next to Clod, quiet for a moment and just drinking before talking.]

Heh. Good enough reason to have a party, I think.

Should I have gotten more food to eat? I thought that some people might think this is too simple.

[And she takes a glass for herself too. Despite her words, she really thought that even juice was a luxury after everything that had happened.]

After last week? I think simple is good.

...They're starting to get seriously angry now, I guess.

Because we aren't accepting the town. Doesn't it seem like that's all they want from us?

It is.

...I think they need us to, or it's going to compromise the system as a whole.

The system already seems compromised. ... I'm guessing you heard that record, right? It sounded like... people back then actually liked Mayfield.

They didn't have to be droned to like it.

Exactly. There's already a compromise, but...

I mean it could hurt it even more. Maybe it'll shatter whatever this is entirely, if we don't start being thankful.

Hmhm. ... and to be honest? Saying this leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but I don't mind being put here all that much anymore.

...I understand.

[He really does. And he's understood for awhile. Really, this is his home for now on, period. That's just the way it is to him.]

...But I'm still wondering if they're fully telling the truth about what's outside.

There are still a lot of things that we don't know. I may not mind living here anymore, but I still can't approve of being pulled from my world without consent. We'll find out all the answers even if we have to pull it out of Zemeckis' throat.

But for now...

Let's enjoy these little calms before the storms.

...Got that right.

I'm getting what I want to know, no matter what.

[And there's a lot. That he needs to know. That by this point, he feels he damn well deserves to know.]

...Did you make it through?

[Mayfield until now has treated her well. Or at least, rather than the town itself, she didn't mind living out a few more days as a normal girl. It was something that she never appreciated at first, but dearly missed once it was stripped away from her. As thankful as Clod is, she isn't the type to let offenses go unpunished.]

If by that you mean that I survived until the radiation took its toll, then yes. ... I didn't want anybody to see me when it happened.

[What do you know?

Pokey's one for not letting offenses go, either.]

...I saw pretty much everyone in the bunker I was in die from it. Except me and maybe a few others.

I don't know. They've been bad before but that was....

It made me angry. It was wrong.

[And really? There's very few times someone can take an action and Pokey would flat out state it to be wrong, but there's nothing else he can think of about this. It was wrong. That's all there was to it.]

This is their way of saying that "it can happen everywhere else, but at least you get a second chance here". Oh, if only they could actually say that instead of...

well...

There are better reasons for triggering the end of the world.

...Do you think it actually has though?

What if it isn't like that outside, but the people here have forgotten.

How many of the people keeping us here are even from the original group that were in here? We still don't have a great idea of what's going on.

And this is why we have to keep fighting. Maybe they have forgotten what it's like out there, but... What does "out there" really mean anyway? We're all from different worlds. You and I probably aren't from the same time periods.

I guess... you have to really wonder just what happened to people like Zemeckis and all the rest. And not only because we deserve to know. At this point, I admit that it has me genuinely curious.
