SGA 3.19 & 3.20, with bonus RPS quote

May 27, 2007 20:35

I've been holding off on watching the last two episodes of SGA season three because there's nothing left afterwards. But today I got hold of most of the SG-1 eps with McKay, and there are DVD commentaries to catch up on, so. I watched 3.19 "Vengeance" and 3.20 "First Strike" just now.

I thought "Vengeance" was okay. Enough with the bugs already, and the show really should be above the damsel-in-distress-in-a-low-cut-blouse thing. I'm kind of tired of Michael, although I've always thought he's weirdly hot I like that they're not letting our team off the hook for that egregious breach of ethics from the first season (or their other attempt in the second). On the upside, the alien pods were suitably icky, Teyla complimented McKay on being one of the best scientists on Earth and got him to sympathize with the enemy at the same time, McKay earned a pretty wound on his jaw, and Ronon and John got to shoot things and blow stuff up.

There is, however, so much to love about "First Strike"! Like Jewel Staite again, playing a doctor instead of a half-Wraith! I hope she becomes a regular character. And stardrive, at last! And lots of pretty CGI of the city! And more action and asteroids and shattering glass and injuries, including many more pretty wounds on Rodney's face (and hasn't Rodney gotten so brave since the beginning of the series, taking charge of the control room even as he's calling for a medical team with that lovely wavery-panicky voice?). And Ronon with his constant smirk sharing amused glances with Teyla as they make John feel more and more awkward trying to explain Earth pop culture. And Rodney complaining that he doesn't know any of his scientist's names and John turning in lazy-ass performance evaluations because he says everyone's doing a good job. And Rodney and Zelenka doing their Jay and Silent Bob routine, Rodney babbling while Zelenka alternately looks adoringly at him and opens his mouth and raises his finger to interrupt. Finding out Zelenka is a department head! And Rodney and Sheppard coming up with an ingenious plan together-so great to see them thinking fast and finishing each other's thoughts, let alone sentences, so much so that even Zelenka didn't know what they were on about.

AND! Sheppard cutting in to their usual bickering with "Why don't you guys just make out and get it over with?" !! That is the kind of canonical slash joke I can get behind, when one character notices another pair's sexual tension. Heh-and neither of them really freaked out over it, either. (Though, still, all three of them have to be bisexual at least, given things like Sheppard's flirtations with women, his discomfort with homosexuality when it comes to himself [e.g. his clarification that he loves Rodney like a friend loves another friend in "Tao of Rodney"] [but not others; e.g. his asking whether Ronon's interested in any guys if not women], and his past marriage; Rodney's well-documented preference for short-haired blondes; and Zelenka's appreciation of one of the female scientists' curves in "The Tao of Rodney.")

Yes. I liked this one lots. Even if Elizabeth gets tiresome when she insists that negotiations are the only way to go when it's clear that the other side doesn't listen to anything. Even if the show gets irksome when its women are the mediators and sympathizers and the men are the fighters and thinkers.

And now I shall leave you with this, your Moment of Zen:

Martin Gero (writer): Joe Flanigan. Good-looking guy. How do you guys feel about that?
Rachel Luttrell (Teyla): I was just about to say the same thing.
Rainbow Sun Francks (Ford): In a very hetero way, I'd like to see him play volleyball.

(Audio commentary, "Childhood's End")

ETA: I should add that, sad as it is to have seen all the aired episodes, it's cool to now be able to determine for certain what's canon and what's fanon with all these tidbits and recurring themes in fanfic. Except for McKay -- but watching those SG-1 episodes should take care of that. I assume the citrus allergy was explicitly stated there, and that that's where the piano story was revealed.
