Last Line (Last Line Book 1) by Harper Fox
I know that you are bound to expect dark themes when it comes to Harper Fox, but, this was the darkest one I have read from her.
And you know from the very beginning what is waiting for you: the very first scene is of one of the protagonists, Mike, being tortured and psychologically programmed during a mission for MI5.
Three years later, he's working in a renegade counterterrorism agency, Last Line, with John Griffin as his partner. John, who is hopelessly in love with him. John, who after accepting that Mike is out of reach, has beginning to hope that maybe they can build something together. But now, his past is coming to reclaim Mike.
From then on, we're witness to Mike's struggle to understand what's going on with him and John's relentless attempts to help him while fighting with his jealousy at first and then with increasing fear.
As always, this is a superbly written book, one that for moments it gets difficult to read because you love these characters, and they are going through hell. And yet, you can't stop...
The characters are fabulous, complex and so... human. All the secondary ones are also great, particularly Quin, who I think will have a greater part in the next story.
This is, hands down, the best book I read by this author. Gritty, dark, and yet never hopeless, never loveless. And it's love, in fact, what at the end will save them all.
The narration is excellent, too. I simply can't wait to listen to the next one. I imagine we'll get more information about the paranormal side of this story, but a lot of heart-ache too. It's Harper Fox, after all.
