Because we wanted so much, when we finally made that wish, it could not come true.
In the encompassing darkness under the glare of a pale crescent moon, two figures ran under the yellow street light and were briefly illuminated. One man followed the other and reached out to stop the other from running away.
"Tell me, Ohno!" Sho yelled, grasping Ohno's sleeve and holding on tightly. "Tell me the truth!"
Ohno gathered his strength and yanked himself free. He stumbled onto the road with Sho desperately catching him from behind.
"Ohno!" Sho screamed, his voice piercing their eardrums.
Their vision flashed white as the head lights of an oncoming car washed over them. In that instant, Ohno turned back to embrace Sho. Their combined warmth met cold metal.
The beat of the cardiac monitor registered Sho's steady heart rate. He lay motionless; an oxygen mask over his mouth, needles in his veins, and hooked up to machines. Aiba and Jun sat at his bedside and looked down at him, as motionless as he, afraid they would miss something if they happened to momentarily turn away.
Aiba broke the heavy silence first. He leaned forward into his clasped hands and whispered, "Is Nino coming?"
"Mm," Jun mumbled. "I don't know."
"This is Matsumoto Jun," Nino introduced. He indicated the man at his side who stood stylishly in a low cut t-shirt, casual dark blue jeans, heavy brown boots, and his wrists adorned with multicolored leather bands.
Opposite them in a hooded sweatshirt and faded sweats, Sho felt like a sorry excuse for a human male. When Nino introduced him to Jun as his childhood friend who went to a certain university, Jun's eyes brightened. Jun asked Sho if he knew Ohno who went to the same university.
"No," Sho answered, glad to not have a shared acquaintance.
"How about the four of us meet up for a drink sometimes?" Nino suggested. He grinned at Jun then Sho. "You've got to meet this guy, Sho. He's amazing."
"Sure," Sho said, with as much enthusiasm as he could muster, because he wanted that smile on Nino's face to remain even if he had to share it with Jun.
In the evening after their classes, Sho welcomed Jun, followed by Nino, into his humble apartment. Much later, Ohno showed up and turned out to be a quiet person, not timid, but not extroverted either. He was the opposite of Jun. He had a dark tan, his black hair was cropped short, and he dressed in faded baggy jeans and a large, stretched t-shirt.
After the first hour of their meeting, Sho realized what Nino meant when he said Ohno was amazing; Ohno rarely objected to anything and so he did everything Nino ordered him to. Jun did not seem to realize his best friend had become an object of entertainment. Sho felt no sympathy for Ohno, because he knew Nino never forced his will on others.
Into his third can of beer, Nino started giggling in the way that he never did when he was sober. Before he made too much noise, Jun wrapped his arms around Nino and carried him up. He excused both of them for the night and left with Nino, leaving both Sho and Ohno alone.
Ohno continued to sip his beer quietly after their departure. Into the awkward silence, he mumbled, "They shine next to each other." Jun and Nino were perfect for each other.
Sho knew without Ohno's unnecessary help. Irritated, he threw his empty can at Jun's friend. It knocked against the side of Ohno's head and rebounded to the floor. Sho started to laugh it off as a joke, pretending he felt slightly intoxicated, but he caught sight of Ohno's pitiful expression and stopped mid chuckle. Sho made a guess about Ohno's feelings and he knew he was right, because he saw a reflection of himself.
But you should know that even when you surrendered, I kept believing.
Visiting hours were supposedly over, but Nino had crept inside without the staffs' awareness. The cardiac monitor to the side of the hospital room continued to sound steadily. Sho continued to lie silently, the oxygen mask over his mouth regulating his breathing. Nino only watched him at first. Then as the stillness of the room lengthened, Nino fell down to his knees beside the bed. He reached out and smoothed his hand over Sho's.
"Sho, wake up," he murmured.
They knew their limits and knew their relationship, outside of being friends with Nino and Jun, was purely physical. Even though they never said it, they knew they felt nothing for each other. Their intimacy was to slate the biting hunger and lust for what they couldn't have. Ohno and Sho met once a week just for sex.
As Nino moved further from his reach, Sho drowned in the emptiness Nino left behind. He saw Ohno beside him, locked in the same place of desolation behind Jun.
Aiba and Ohno were friends; had been friends far longer than their friendship with Jun. Aiba coincidentally worked at the convenience store in Sho's neighborhood.
He appeared outside Sho's apartment one night after his shift. Baffled, Sho allowed him entrance, but Aiba slammed him against his wall without warning. The weight and their combined force hit the thin plaster and they fell through to the other side. Sho lay sprawled on a mountain of crumbling plaster. He instantly felt grateful that his neighbor was currently not in.
"If you hurt Satoshi, I'll kill you," Aiba threatened, his large hands around Sho's neck to prevent him from moving.
Sho coughed as dust entered his lungs. He inhaled fresh air and wheezed, "The one that hurts him is Jun." After all, the one Ohno had unreciprocated feelings for was Jun.
Aiba finally backed away, allowing Sho to sit up. His glare faltered and he turned his gaze from Sho. "B-but Satoshi and Jun are only friends. You can hurt Satoshi more than you think. He nevers says no."
After Aiba left, Sho sat in his apartment with a hole in his wall. He thought about all the crappy things that made up his life. After midnight, he finally called Ohno over. To his dismay, Ohno rushed to him without a second's hesitation. He remembered what Aiba had said about Ohno never denying anyone anything.
Inside, Ohno sat down beside Sho and blinked at the hole. "Masaki called and he said he was sorry. He didn't think your wall would break down. He promised to give you money by the end of the next month."
"Your friend is stupid, Jun is stupid, and you're the most stupid," Sho cursed under his breath.
Ohno said nothing and so Sho reached over and forced a kiss on him. He eased Ohno down raining kisses along his face, his neck, and body. Sho wondered why, as he made love to Ohno, he seemed to care that he could hurt Ohno without forcing anything.
Much later, they apologized to Sho's neighbor and landlord for the hole in the wall and temporarily patched it together.
There was something I wanted to tell you:
If that wish could not happen, I would make it come true.
A coma, the doctor had told them. Sho dreams.
For how long? they asked. When will Sho wake?
The doctor had said, Not until he wants to.
Nino and Jun broke up for the last time.
Sho had planned to meet up with Ohno after his part-time job, but he saw Nino curled up outside his door and cancelled his plans. He helped Nino inside and did his best to console his long-time friend. When Nino embraced him silently, Sho returned his hold. Nino did not cry. Instead, he sighed and buried his face into Sho's shoulder. Sho smoothed his palm up and down Nino's back the way his friend liked it when they were still children.
Finally, Nino murmured, "Some things never change." He raised his head and locked eyes with Sho. "Sho, it's always been just us. We can do without them, right?"
Startled, Sho's determination flickered. His hold on Nino loosened. In response, Nino's grip on him tightened. Nino peered closely at Sho.
"Sho, don't choose Ohno over me." Desperation rang in his voice.
Sho released him and made as to step back, but Nino's fingers dug into his shirt and skin.
Finally, Nino's demeanor cracked and tears glittered in his eyes. "Sho! You just don't know." His head bowed and sobs wracked his slender frame. "Jun cheated on me, did you know that? Jun and Aiba were dating behind my back, did you know that? Jun and Aiba and Ohno knew, did you know that!?" Nino's knees buckled. "Don't leave me, too."
Sho stood frozen with Nino at his feet. Aiba had once threatened Sho about hurting Ohno. And yet he had had no qualms about hurting Nino.
Sho and Ohno faced each other in his apartment. Nino hid in the bathroom.
"You love Nino," Ohno murmured under Sho's accusatory glare. "You will do anything to make Nino happy. I only did the same. Masaki makes Jun happy."
"You knew," Sho repeated under his breath, his teeth clenched in his anger.
"I waited for Jun and Aiba to say something. They were going to tell him."
"Liar!" Nino screamed as he rushed out of the bathroom and faced Ohno. Before Sho could react to his interruption, Ohno had crumbled to the ground. On his knees, Ohno touched his head to the floor at Nino's feet.
"They were going to tell you."
"SO WHAT!?" Nino screamed, and Sho had to hold him back from kicking Ohno. "HE CHEATED ON ME! HE LIED TO ME!"
If we cannot be together, then I will come to you.
That night, Ohno waited for Sho outside his apartment. They were broken, but Ohno's feet and feelings had carried him there. As soon as Sho stopped in front of him, his face expressionless and his eyes glaringly cold, Ohno understood nothing he did would ever turn back time. Without a single word exchanged, he turned to head back the other way, but Sho reached out and grasped his arm.
"Wait."
"I'm sorry," Ohno mumbled.
Sho took him by his shoulders and turned him around so they faced each other. "There's something I had to ask you; that I didn't understand." His fingers dug into Ohno's shoulders. "You said Jun and Aiba told you to keep it a secret. They told you and you just agreed." His expression hardened and Sho paused, gritting his teeth. "If they had told you to cheat on me, too, and to keep it a secret, would you?"
"Sho, I--" Ohno started.
Sho leaned in until their faces were inches apart. "The truth is, you like Jun, but because Aiba liked him, too, you let go. So if they tell you to leave me, will you? Will you? Will you even apologize?" Again, Aiba's words that Ohno would do anything rang in Sho's memory. The thought that Ohno could even leave Sho without a moment's hesitation made his gut wrench.
Ohno clamped his mouth shut. He knew his denial would not make a difference to Sho. He pried Sho's hands off him and ran down the street. But Sho followed.
"Ohno, tell me!"
That day, Nino stood alone at the end of his bed while Jun and Aiba leaned in the doorway out of his way. Dressed in stiff black suits, their attire contrasted against the white walls and faded blue of the furnishings. Their gazes fixed on the still motionless figure of Sho on the bed.
"We can't do anything if he refuses to wake," Jun said.
Nino stepped forward and leaned over his friend. He peered into Sho's pale face and murmured, "What are you dreaming?"
"Come on," Jun said to Aiba and pushed off from the wall. At his side, Aiba burst into tears. Aiba sobbed into his hands and tried to muffle his sounds as they shuffled down the hall.
As they lay Ohno's ashes into the ground that afternoon, Sho lay motionless on the bed and continued to dream.
The sirens blared in his ears. The smell of blood and rust clogged his nose. Sho gasped for breath and could not draw in enough air. His body felt numb, if not in burning hot pain. A few times, his eyes rolled to the back of his head, but every time he willed himself to wake. He refused to rest. Not until he knew Ohno was okay.
"Can you hear me?" the paramedic at his side asked as four men carefully lifted Sho onto a stretcher.
Sho's eyes rolled back again out of his control. When he finally focused, he saw that a few feet away, Ohno was already on another stretcher. But a white sheet was pulled over his still form.
Sho took one last deep breath and finally closed his eyes.
At last, in my dreams we are happy.
