i take lamictal and really like it. i have ultra-ultra rapid cycles and it works very well for that. i also tend to have very bad depression that tends to last longer than my mania and be more dangerous and life threatening. the lamictal also works well for this. i do not take an anti-depressant with it.
the only problems i have is that sometimes i have a bit of breakthrough mania that manifests in agitation and anxiety. for this i have xanax.
my side affects are rather mild. it suppresses my appetite so i schedule my eating. i eat at times that i think regular people eat regardless of how i feel about it. breakfast at 9, lunch at 12, etc. it keeps me from accidentally having mood problem from lack of food. the other side affect for me is some mild nausea on occasion. it is not bad enough for me to consider quitting the lamictal.
i would tell the dr that you are not satisfied with how your meds are working and the side affects. tell him what you have read about lamictal and why it seems like a good fit. my dr. is very receptive to this sort of thing.
good luck!
