Work Practices

The image above was the image used in an email sent by one of my work clients earlier today. I'm not knowledgeable in the work practices of other nations, and admittedly they are Canadian so it might be kosher to turn up to work covered in maple syrup, however in my experience doing something like has been known to cause all-out war between company staff.

In more work related news, I've discovered the dilemma with my work; It boils down to choices.

I love my work and I love what I do, and it is not modesty when I say I am good at my work. A large portion of the company software is only running on this day because of the efforts I have put into my work. I love knowing that feeling; pride I assume. A benefit of this is the freedom offered to me without the work ethics most companies enforce, a benefit I share with my fellow employees who work for me. Music, web, relaxed times, all readily available here.

And now the dilemma. The company SUCKS. It's run terribly, we have morons where we need minds and minds where we need monkeys.

It's a company of beliefs where none exist. An example: No Melbourne Cup, no Lotto pools - this would promote gambling. No alcohol is allowed on work premises, hence any socialising takes place out of work zones where conveniently we pay for ourselves. The list goes on unfortunately.

I've also just had two weeks of holidays knocked back due to there not being at least two other employees who can do my job. Two things came up from that: I've been told it was up to me to ensure someone else could do my work, however I'm not the person reviewing résumés (I do host the interviews) and #2 technically now I am not allowed to take any holidays, ever, unless there is someone else to back me up.

So I balance between the work I love and the company which sucks. When the scales tip, I cope. Where there is a ton weight, the scales will fall and a choice will be made.
